Mangalore, Oct 13:
A traffic awareness programme for vehicle drivers was held at the auditorium of St Joseph’s the Worker church, Vamanjoor, on Sunday October 12. It was jointly organized by the parish unit of Catholic Sabha and St Christopher Association, Rosario Cathedral.

Fr Joseph Cardoza, parish priest of the church, inaugurated the programme on Sunday morning. Speaking on the occasion, he said that before setting on a journey, one should have clear plans that will prevent unnecessary hurry and possible mishaps.

Ronnie D’Souza, president, parish unit of Catholic Sabha, presided over the programme.  Keshav Dharani, RTO inspector, and lawyer Rekha Shetty were the chief guests.

Dharani said that 97,000 fatal accidents occur annually in our country. The traffic flow between Udupi and the city has increased in the recent past.  Most accidents occur due to fatigued truck drivers who work without proper rest and are away from their families. Motorcyclists in rural areas are more prone to major accidents as they don’t wear helmets. If every motorist adheres to traffic rules at all times, there would be a significant drop in accidents.

Shetty explained the procedures involved in filing FIRs with the traffic police, reporting the accident to the insurance company, first-aid, and legal assistance. Fr Fredrick Monteiro, assistant parish priest, Gerald Monteiro, vice-president, parish council, Flossy Lobo, secretary, parish unit of Catholic Sabha, and Victor Menezes, secretary, Christopher Association, were present on the dais.

Susheel Noronha, president, St Christopher Association, said that the association membership had already crossed 1,500 and urged others to enroll at the earliest. Roshan Kamat compered the programme while Flossy Lobo proposed vote of thanks.

Parish priests also blessed several automobiles, parked on the church premises for the purpose.
