BANGALORE, Oct 14: Priests and the police differ over the cause of a fire in a church on the outskirts of Bangalore, near Attibele, early on Monday.

While the church authorities say it was set on fire by miscreants, the police and Forensic Science Laboratory officials are of the view that electric short-circuit was the cause of the fire.

Copies of Bible and musical instruments were destroyed in the fire at St. Anthony’s Church at Yedavana Halli, 35 km from the city.

The church was built in 2005.

Members of various organisations held a protest in front of the church and urged the State Government to take stringent action against the miscreants.

On Sunday, mass was held at the church till 11 p.m.

Two armed policemen were supposedly on guard round-the-clock in view of the recent attacks on churches across the State.

Planned attack

“The fire was a planned attack by some miscreants,” claimed Father Santhosh, priest of the church. “Two policemen were deployed to guard the church. Around 12.30 a.m. they left the place. Taking advantage of this, the miscreants barged into the church and set it ablaze,” he told

St. Anthony’s Church at Yedavana Halli, near Bangalore, where things were destroyed in a fire on Monday.

“Copies of the Bible, choir song books, Infant Jesus idols, materials used for mass, pianos, dress materials of Father, ‘param prasadam’ box, flower vase, candle vase, and other materials worth Rs. 10 lakh, were destroyed in the fire,” he said. Preliminary investigations indicate that short-circuit was the cause of the fire, claimed police officials. “A team led by Assistant Director of Forensic Science Laboratory Mallesh inspected the church. The Electrical Inspector P.N. Appacchu and a technical team from Bangalore Electric Supply Company (BESCOM) also visited the spot. According to them, short-circuit is the cause,” a police officer, who did not want to be named, said.

According to the police, though the church was recently constructed, it had no fire alarm. The MCB distribution board (which trips power in case of an overload) and switch gears of the church were defunct. The MCB did not break the circuit when the fire happened. Sixteen mm cables were used in the church for power supply. Those cables could not bear the power fluctuation. This might have caused the fire, the officer said.

Two fire engines put out the fire. Father Santhosh had filed a complaint and investigation is on, the Attibele police said. “I inspected the church and will submit a report to the Government. Electric wiring has melted. The police, Fire and Emergency Services, BESCOM and other officials have to send their reports. The police should also record statements of church authorities, eye-witnesses and local people. Based on those reports and a scientific investigation, the exact reason can be known,” Mr. Appacchu said.

Meanwhile, residents of Yedavana Halli complained they had been facing frequent electric short-circuit and urged the Government to set it right. “Due to the high voltage, several laptops, TV sets and electronic gadgets got damaged recently in several houses at Adigondana Halli, three km from the church. I too lost my laptop,” Father Santhosh said.

“Miscreants act” or “Short circuit” God has seen it. We can’t judge at this stage univocally . However, due to chain of event since Sept. 14th attack on churches and Prayer places, people do not conclude either subjectively.

However, patience has limit yet being minority we are helpless to the impose punishment that we seek for. Trusting in God, God has also limit to his patience also and ONE day he will come upon heavily where it hurt most for those who deserve it. This is Act of God was evident since the very establishment of the Churches. HE will not allow us to suffer more than we can endure.

Dear Wolly, you can come to your own conclusion after this “The priest at the Church Fr Santosh however has denied the version of police officials and claimed that the church was attacked my miscreants. He said that the books that were placed in different locations including different rooms were gutted and this cannot happen due to short circuit, he maintained. Fr Santosh also maintained that all electric devices and equipments were safe.” However, yet it is wise to have patience even if some trust is lost with the government machinery.

We Christians should be ashamed to blame everything on communal riots. We should not just take everything for granted. We christians have learned to have patience until matter has been studied and not jump into false conclusion. This will only spill oil over burning fire. This should not be in the Christians intrest. Thank you. Wolly James

Have these people no better job than to instigate and ignite the passion of peace loving citizens? Its better for all of us to understand Human Rights and the Rights under Constitution and do our duties as a noble citizens of this country.

It’s high time that the law and order takes a strict measure to curb all the illegal and unconstitutional activities of these miscreants. When the law is lenient for the law breakers they find it attractive to do all this mischief so that everyone’s peace is shattered. How can investment come to Karnataka if things continue at this rate? How will the government answer to all the small and big entrepreneurs’ and the foreign Investors if peace is disrupted and the progress halted? It is a misery that all of us are tolerant to all these mis-deeds and no one voices concern on this issue. Why don’t citizens of Karnataka raise their voices against all this unwanted mischief so that at least the future will be bright and secure and all of us to live in peace and harmony?

I appeal to all parties to rise above party lines and be honest and upright citizens to condemn all acts of mischief and violence to any community or religion. Moreover no political party should be allowed to politize the issue as the Elections are nearing. Let us live as Indians first respect and love our country and our fellowmen and work towards the goal of peace, progress and prosperity. Its ironical that India is a peace loving country, no doubt that the medals we have won in Olympics is only in wrestling, boxing and firing………..!
