Mangaluru: Destruction of Western Ghats reason for floods in Kodagu and Kerala - NEPC

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 19: "The situation created by the incessant rain and floods in Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Kerala is already out of control. The Yettinahole project, which the state government is implementing is responsible for the ecological imbalance. At present mindless cutting of trees on a mammoth scale is taking place in the Western Ghats. Because of this, the land of Western Ghats is unable to retain the water and losing its strength," said National Environment Protection Council (NEPC) expressing its concern over the present flood and landslide scenario in the Western Ghat area.

Usage of earth movers and deforestation

"Huge hills and mountains are falling due to the usage of heavy JCB machines. Western Ghats have lost their land mass due to the huge stone quarries dug at many places. The Western Ghats are becoming witness to a historical disaster which was never heard before in its history. Political leaders are running towards the flood relief centres on the pretext of providing help. However, no one is taking the initiative to prevent the destruction of the environment," said the statement given by the council.

NEPC further analyses the reason and says, "Government is planning to cut seven lac trees of Shola forest in the Western Ghats in order to make a 200 feet wide road at Bisileghat. It is not willing to budge from its decision, even though the environment lovers and organizations are holding protests against this plan. Coffee estates in Madikeri are cut into several parts and are converted into resorts. Each house has dug a bore well and the forest is being transformed into a concrete jungle. This is the reason for inviting the wrath of nature."

People of plains are against Yettinahole project

"The revenue minister is asking people to cut down the forests and make farms. However, the people of plain regions themselves are saying that they will not get water from the Yettinahole project and they do not want the project. However, the politicians including the central minister and MP of Chikkaballapur are not paying attention to the opinion of the public. The people are also not questioning their actions on the Yettinahole project," says the NEPC expressing its unhappiness.

Goa and Chikkamagaluru next in line

The NEPC warns that Madikeri and Kerala have borne the brunt of nature because of the relentless destruction of the forest for the past five decades. It will not be a surprise if Goa and Chikkamagaluru will be the next in line to face similar calamity. But the public is supporting people who are destroying the environment and revering people who destroy the forest."

Wakeup call for citizens

Sashidhar Shetty, convenor of the union says, "Even some of the visual media has not made an honest attempt to unearth the truth behind the destruction and encroachment of forest and killing of wild animals and do justice to the environment. If the citizens do not wake up even at this juncture and join hands to save nature, then they have to pay a huge price for the horrible wrath of nature in the future."

This nonsense of cutting down trees must stop at least now. Flooding is taking place every year somewhere or the other. Two years back it was in Madras and now it has happened in Kerala. Experts warn that Goa would be the next state to be affected. Don't expect the rotten and corrupt ministers to worry about the people. We have to get together and stop further cutting down of trees. If we don't help ourselves nobody is going to come to our rescue. Act now - before it gets too late. We will be hacking our own legs if we don't stop the cutting down of trees.

Enough and more has been written in these columns about the Recommendations of Madhav Gadgil Committee.

Apart from implementing these recommendations in TOTO, let the MOEFF be SURE of the definition of the very word FOREST.

The current FOREST means even a 10 % cover. All in the name of Development.

    Development for whom?
    Only the Politicians !!!

The People's voice should be heard and drastic measures be taken as we will continue to see calamities worse in Chickmagalur, Shimoga and North & South Kanara as well as Goa & Konkan regions where the Coastal area has been literally Raped.

Please tell t=me is there any Country in the Globe which has described COCONUT palm as a Grass ????

    How GROOOOSS indeed.

We need bigger dams than the existing ones to store more rain water.. Plan accordingly..

Example one is three Georges dam in our neighbouring country... They are generating 20,000 MW of electricity from this dam which is enough for our entire Karnataka...

If we get good rain that is beautiful... Use rain water judicially....

One does not havr to uproot trees for building roads. There could be a good planning for this . Why cant tge road be elavated i.e. bridge been constructed long way enough so that the forest is preserved and the highway constructed...
Politicians are giving a deaf ear to this problem os for the reason they may have eaten bribe from the such projects and now cant stall it. They don't understand that in death tolls it include their family also one day and would regret the day they are supporting such projects ...... Hope the government is listening this. Activists whose case is not stronger can go with the option for elavated bridge i.e. entire road jn bridges...for eg mumbai metro railways ... This will save the ecological balance and wont impact much.

Late Stephen Hawking, physicist, cosmologist, had said that mankind has only 100 years left on Earth. I completely agree with him. If man goes on destroying mother nature for his greed and his luxury and benefit...I think this is the beginning of the end. I agree that development is necessary ..but at what cost? We have polluted our environment and have not learnt any lessons. If we don't learn, nature will teach us. That is what has happened. This is a wake up call..but will anyone listen to it?

Some joker is writing "This is monsoon season, and flooding is well expected... Nothing special in it." as of it's happening every where.. yes, it's clear indication of touching the western ghats. The stupid Siddu Govt went against the nature and now public paid for it. he must be enjoying his new era in some resort. Digging western ghats, puttin pipelines... so huge pipelines.... construction work in Western ghat... all these has hit the nature so badly that it's abnormal rainy season and flooding around... also we contributed with all sort of pollution... all sorts of pollution. Not we pay for it... but whether we learn from this disaster , NO.. absolutely NO. evidence is a video which is running around in whatsapp , of the bridge where all dust , bottles , waste accumulated from a river and instead of disposing it somewhere , a JCB putting it back to water... how stupid people we are. Forget about that driver.... where the hell the authorities mind has gone dumb... how can they do that... very very unfortunate.

In July 2014, an entire village called Malin inPune was destroyed by heavy landslides killing more than 150 people, disaster was man made like in Kodagu & Kerala!

The landslides were caused by heavy rainfall that had begun the previous day, with the village receiving 10.8 cm (4 in) of rain on 29 July and the downpour continuing throughout the following day. The environmental destruction that resulted in the landslide is believed to have had many causes. Major cause was negligence of geological facts before any developmental process. Another cause cited as contributing to the landslide was deforestation in the area.[7] Deforestation removes not only trees, but also root structures that hold together the soil.[8] Through deforestation, the soil of the surrounding land was made loose, and experts argue that deforestation was the primary undelaying anthropogenic cause of the landslide.[9] One additional reason was changing agricultural practices – villagers had recently shifted from cultivation of rice and finger millet to wheat, which required levelling of steep areas, which contributed to instability of the hills. Also the construction of the nearby Dimbhe Dam ten years ago was considered as a possible reason. The instability of the hillsides was due to the construction activities, which are often done without careful analysis of environmental consequences.[10] Stone quarrying, among other types of construction, was specifically blamed by Sumaira Abdulali of the Awaaz Foundation, for the instability of the hillside.[11]

DK will be next in the list because of wanton and extensive deforestation, illegal sand mining, quarrying etc in most of the hilly regions called Padavs; in fact, landslides have already started since the past 3-4 years, this will gather momentum in future! Big wakeup call for all living in risky places!!

Now that there is flooding people are giving many reasons. But the fact of the matter is that in Kerala the Periyar river has changed its course in earlier times too. The famed port of muziris where ships from the Roman empire came to trade dissapeared thousand years ago.Same case with our mangalore rivers. Earlier Bokappatna in mangalore was a port and now it is Bunder because the rivers changed course in 1870. So Ecology/environment destruction is one of the many reasons for the flooding and maybe not the only one.

Water should be allowed to flow freely, if you store water at hill top without proper arrangement, it will find a way to come out. Same is happening with the Ettinahole project. More over, one timber merchant from Kerala who later on became the home minister of Karnataka, emptied the entire western ghat forests with the support of his master.

Day by day man is becoming more and more greedy in the lust to become more powerful or have artificial luxury life. (Even though he knows he cannot carry his wealth to his grave).Instead of leaving behind acres of concrete jungle to our kids, we can think of gifting them a liveable earth .
we can't rely on any political parties to save nature. We all common people should claim saving nature, proper drainage, water treatment, waste management etc as our basic rights. if we all stand together as one, even the political parties cannot move a stone.

The mountain range that runs along the west coast of peninsular India from Tamil Nadu through Kerala, Karnataka and Goa to Maharashtra is known as the Western Ghats and is very well known for its majestic beauty. It is also among the top eight biodiversity hotspots in the world. The Western Ghats host over 400 species and seven distinct vegetation types.

The Western Ghats are often in the news due to constant threat to their biodiversity. Forest cover has declined by up to 50% in parts of Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka and the evergreens in Kerala are facing a threat of extinction.

The Ghats run perpendicular to the moisture-laden southwest monsoon winds gusting in from the Arabian Sea, forcing the winds to climb the mountain range to get over to the other side. This climb leads to an expansion of the winds since pressure decreases with height in the atmosphere and the expansion leads to a cooling and thus condensation of the moisture. This results in annual rainfall ranging from 2000 mm to nearly 7800 mm. If you are hiking the Ghats during the rainy season and happen to catch one of the break periods in the monsoon, then you will see water vapour pouring out of lush green vegetation like steam over a hot cup of coffee.

Continued deforestation is of great concern for the ecological community due to the loss of precious flora and fauna. This study puts a finer point on the value of the Western Ghats biodiversity as a significant source of moisture for rainfall over parts of India that are constantly struggling for water for agriculture as well as domestic and industrial use. The battle cry for protecting biodiversity hotspots and the overall forest cover over the Western Ghats just got louder.

The natures fury in Kerala and Coorg and drought in Tamil Nadu and Hyderbad Karnatak is alert call from God to humans. The nature need respect.

Congress, Communists and Church in Kerala had opposed Gadgil report in 2013. The report wanted to declare Western Ghats as ecologically fragile and impose strict regulations on farming, plantations, quarrying that cause massive deforestation.

Madhav Gadgil, noted ecologist said Kerala floods are man made and had predicted it in 2011.

Chikamagaluru, North Kanara and Goa are the next to be affected in future.

    Very true.
Mother nature is a real great, super strong safety cover.
Destroying mother nature is gradually destroying our very own foundation on which we are living and our civilization.
There is some balancing mechanism, human wisdom is not enough to understand the natures balancing system.
No amount of compensation can restore the loss caused by destruction of mother nature such as Destruction of Western Ghats.
It's imperative to respect mother nature and adapt it for our own interest and survival.

The people of DK – Udupi are not against sharing of water with Chikkabalapur and Kolar regions. There are modern methods of storing and supplying water to distant regions. We know why politicians across party lines are interested in Rs.13000 Crore Yettinahole Project. They are least bothered about protecting nature and environment. Cutting down forests and diversion of Nethravati River must be stopped at all costs. Otherwise the coming generations may have to face dangerous consequences.
