Mangaluru: Newlywed couple collects flood relief money at wedding hall itself

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 21: In a unique example of humanity and brotherhood, aid was collected in cash for the flood-affected victims of Kerala in the wedding hall itself due to the initiative taken by the newlywed couple.

This Good Samaritan act occurred at the Rajangana wedding hall of Kinnigoli near here on Sunday, August 19.

Wedding of Jithesh Pakkala, a resident of Mukka and Pratima, a resident of Gurpur, took place in the said hall. As the couple was getting ready to sit on the wooden seats meant for the rituals of the wedding (Hasemane), the process of flood relief collection was initiated by them by providing some cash money. Then the box was circulated throughout the wedding hall. All the guest and well-wishers contributed as per their capacity.

A total amount of Rs 11,000 was collected in less than one hour.

The collected money was sent by cheque to the chief minister's relief fund.

Donations and contributions are required for the needy but this is kind of peer pressure. Guests are coming for wedding, give gifts and the bride and grooms are collecting donations for relief fund. The guests might have given donations already through somewhere and they came to participate the wedding. Please avoid this kind of forcible donations and don't make the guests to feel "why they came for the wedding". Bride and Groom need to remember the purpose of inviting the guests which is very important.
In my opinion this is not an innovation idea, rather humiliation and peer pressure. Just a thought.

I take flower bouquet to wedding due to peer pressure especially, when "No present" mentioned in the invitation. Within hours these flowers are become fodder for animals. What a waste when people are struggling to keep the roof over their head or to pay their medical bills.

Yes, Rs.500 crore Indian wedding created lots of jobs in Brazil, China, Switzerland etc. Two thousand moderate houses could have been built with this money creating lots of job for the economy. Yes, one can do whatever he/she wants to do. In this case the couple has done just that which is highly appreciable.

LOL this is what people do not understand. Host clearly said no present, they why would u take flowers and throw. If you take it by choice it is up to you and no one pressurized you.

Flowers are considered not a gift. The host should mention on the invitation that no presents, no flowers. Or the invitation should say "In lieu of presents and flowers, please make donation to the flood relief fund.....etc." (A donation box will be placed at the wedding stage).

NN....WHEN HOST SAYS NO PRESENTS, WHY YOU PRESENTING FLOWERS TO THEM. THIS IS SOME PEOPLE'S UNDERSTANDING LEVEL.

I SAW SOME PEOPLE TAKE GIFTS EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO PRESENTS WRITE UP ON THE INVITATION. PEOPLE NEED TO THINK THAT THEY HAVE BEEN INVITED TO CELEBRATE A WEDDING AND EVEN THE HOST SHOULD THINK ABOUT THIS. WEDDING CEREMONY IS NOT TO COLLECT DONATIONS. THERE ARE OTHER PLACES FOR IT.
JUST READ THE INVITATION CLEARLY AND IF ANY DOUBTS CLARIFY WITH THE HOST. YOU HAVE BEEN INVITED TO SHARE THE JOY AND JUST ENJOY......

What a noble thought ! We should cut down spending on flowers, band, cake and other non-essential things and donate that money to needy.

Yes, you are right marriage celebration itself can be stopped. It is individual choice. Do what you feel appropriate.
Example: you stop flowers. Do you know how much it will be impacted to the economy and society. It stops several jobs and income. Have you heard "Say it with Flowers". Yes, flowers are required for all the celebrations and only certain people will understand the value, meaning and sentiments of flowers.
