Bengaluru, Aug 22: Even as Kodagu is slowly heaving a sigh of relief at the slowdown in the rain devastation caused by heavy rains, flooding and landslides resulting in havoc on the lives and property, the State Government is taking every effort to ensure rescue and rehabilitation reaches those who most need it.
As part of the efforts, social welfare minister Priyank Kharge has said that his department will release a sum of Rs 25 crore towards relief measures for the district’s most vulnerable and at-risk residents.
The minister has also directed officials of the social welfare department to tour the district and assess the damage caused by the unprecedented rains.
“We have seen repeatedly that such natural calamities take their toll on the most vulnerable and at-risk people and that rehabilitation is delayed due to slow assessments of damage and financial planning for the same. The Department will survey and take immediate action as soon as the rain subside,’’ he said
“The social welfare ministry has reserved a care package of Rs 25 crore. We hope this will address immediate needs. The road to recovery will be hard and long, but we will try restore normalcy sooner than later,” he said.
Kharge appealed to all officers and staff of the Department and various boards and corporations coming under the Department to offer their assistance to the affected people.
Meanwhile, 5100 Kg of relief material was airlifted from Air Force Station Yelahanka to Mysuru by two transport aircraft of Training Command, IAF. The relief material is further being transported by IAF helicopters to Harangi in Kushalnagar for onward dispatch to flood affected areas of Madikeri, Karnataka.
