Madikeri: One seriously injured in wild elephant attack

Madikeri, Oct 1: Satish, a resident of Kalakodli grama of Shanivarasanthe near here was severely injured when a wild elephant suddenly attacked him on the morning of Sunday, September 30.

Satish was going in bike towards the coffee estate, which is near his house at around 7 am. A tusker, which was in a gang of wild elephants, suddenly chased Satish, who fell in the roadside drain out of fear. When the pachyderm tried to attack him, villagers who were passing by the road made huge noises which scared the elephant and it disappeared into the nearby forest.

Satish has received serious injuries to his waist and shoulder. The villagers got him treated at the primary health center at Kodlipete and took him to Hassan for further medical treatment.

According to the villagers, an elephant calf had died a week ago under the limits of Yasalur reserve forest of Sakleshpur. During that time a herd of around 10 wild elephants had camped in that vicinity. The villagers suspect that the same herd might have reached Kattepura forest which is nearby the place of this attack.

Kotresh, RFO, Shanivarasanthe and personnel of forest department of Kodlipete division visited the spot and are investigating further.
