Udupi: Catholic Sabha holds awareness for emigrants in gulf countries

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (HB)

Udupi, Oct 15: Catholic Sabha Udupi region organized awareness programme in association with district administration on ‘Problems faced by the emigrants in gulf countries, solution and legal advice’.

The awareness was held at Catholic Sabha office hall, Udupi on Sunday October 14.

President of human rights protection foundation, Dr Ravindranath Shanbaug, speaking on the occasion said, “I have been working since 40 years in the human rights protection foundation. Most of the victims are senior citizens over property issues and 40-45% of them are women. The statistics was reported in a survey conducted by Mangaluru University. There are different kinds of problems faced by them.”

“Today all communities have their own associations. Why don’t they come forward to solve these problems? Domestic and family disputes are the biggest challenge today. Out of total 900 cases, 300 cases belong to Catholic community. Most of the poor and illiterate family members are going to gulf countries. As far as I know, every 2 out of 100 people get into trouble in gulf,” he said.

According Shanbaug, women, unskilled labourers, drivers, cleaners, maids, nurses are the victims. “There is no single authorized or registered immigrant agency in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. According to the immigration Act there is no provision to have sub-agents. There are cases where many girls disappeared without any trace. The deals happen in Mumbai and Delhi in the form of auction,” he said.

“A 42-year-old Jacintha Mendonca from Mudarangady is the live example for the harassment. Her life is a lesson for those who want to go to gulf countries. She suffered for almost 18 months. There is an agent and women trafficker named Shabas Khan who is roaming around in Mumbai without the fear of police. The police department did nothing in Jacintha’s case. There are many such agents haunting innocents,” he added.

He alleged that the half of the police personnel protects VIPs and half of them are on street (traffic).

“Let us start working from our respective community level in order to protect senior citizens,” he said.

“Nowadays senior citizens are asking reservation in seats, tickets and other places. But I strongly oppose it. We need to protect the youngsters, who are becoming victims of drugs. All senior citizens are not orphans,” he said.

He further said that in any suspicious death case, there is a provision to apply for second post-mortem report considering it as a special case.

“There are thousands of women who have gone missing. The family do not have the information of their whereabouts. But people do not talk about it. There is a proposal to open 'Vigilance Cell' in Udupi to help senior citizens as well as victims. DC Priyanka also has extended her support in this regard. It will start within a week. I prefer it should be started by a Catholic Church or community,” he said.

Alwyn Quadros, president of Catholic Sabha Udupi diocese welcomed.

Mary D'Souza, appointed president of Catholic Sabha, Maxim D'souza, secretary, Gerald Rodrigues, treasurer and Valerian Fernandes were present during the programme.

Flavian D'Souza compered the programme.

Very good initiative by Catholic Sabha Udupi Pradesh
By virtue of the motivation, Catholic Sabha had resolved to install a Emigrants Cell
Wish participation and support from all concerned
Not only Catholic Sabha, but all our organisations away from native place, both Domestic and overseas, need to come in touch for networking.
If in touch, can come together quickly, in case of need and Emmergency
If not willing to come together to assist the needy, the very existence of the organisation itself is noteworthy.
When I was at the helm, had opportunities to respond to some distress calls and support of our Volunteers in Saudi Arabia, Oman was heartening. They not only organised repatriation of mortal remains, bearing all the expenses but also gathered contributions and sent large amounts to the families.
As mentioned by Dr Shanbhogue during his interactions yesterday, wish we all exhibited the same humane spirit & attitude, over here domestically, to help one another irrespective of religion.
I am sure any facility organised by Catholic Sabha, will be open to all brethren.
Like the 'peace time exercises 'in the armed forces ; our routine meetings and activities are only keep us going and helping those in distress is the purpose of existence.
Hope the annual program of Catholic Sabha Udupi Pradesh R; 'Ektharachem Natal '
Envisaged for this purpose will be organised with greater vigour and better participation.

Dr.Shanbaug is the right person to be associated with when it comes to the issues highlighted in the event, and much more.

In spite of such a burden on his shoulders, he is doing a service to humanity, that calls for India's national awards.

More organizations should come forward to shoulder Dr.Shanbaug's mission, so that his work will benefit many of the affected victims.

I salute Dr.Shanbaug for his good deeds.

    Jai Hind!!!

No One comes to hold your finger unless you have some decent friends around you...
affiliating to any kind of social organization will help in case of emergency in Gulf. Staying in isolation is the problem for many.

My hats off to Mr. Ravindranath Shanbaug, President of human rights protection foundation for his sincere and wonderful advice to people working in the Gulf countries. His speech is an eye opener for all those working there and having some problem or the other. I also worked in Dubai in the 1975-80's but there was no such problem at that time. Kudos to Catholic Sabha Udupi district for organizing this awareness programme. I would advice all those who are facing such problems should get in touch with such organizations.

Very good move. People who intend to go to gulf as drivers and domestic help and also technical personnel should know it is not all bed of roses. From the photis of audience I can make out the speach is grasped well.

But did he just say senior citizens ask for reservations!? Why not? Every issue should be addressed seperately and given importance because previldge is the right of senior citizens which is provided by the government that too from our own tax.

We are more busy in celebrating feasts, cutting the ribbons and honoring donors who give huge donations for buildings. Whatever charity organisation we have now that is done by our forefathers. Nothing has done in recent past, if you find new charity organisation then that is done by Individuals with their own initiative.

We neither educated people who were going to be trapped nor we have time to motivate or strengthen people who suffer financially , physically and emotionally.

Now we have changed a lot. It is like Modi Govt. who has got money they will be honored and if they have loan & ill gotten money they will be protected. This is the fact. Time for introspect.

Anyway it is a good initiative though it is late and thanks to Dr Ravindranath Shanbaug a great Personality of DK.

Only after Modi government, everyone gets justice. Sushma Swaraj is handling everything very efficiently.
Earlier, did we even know whom to contact in case of distress in abroad?
