Udupi, Oct 30: Two persons, who were accused of being involved with an incident of assault which happened at Kutyaru within the limits of Shirva police station six years ago, were found guilty and sentenced by the court here. The third additional JMFC court here awarded three years and six months of jail to both the accused, identified as William D'Almeida and Charles D'Almeida.

The incident had happened at 10 am on April 21, 2012 at Bhattageni in Kutyaru village. The accused had entered the house of Celestine Noronha, after which William D'Almeida reportedly attacked Mary Pinto with a cudgel. When her husband, Stany Pinto, tried to shield his wife, another accused, Charles D'Almeida attacked him with a sickle and left him injured. Sebastian Noronha, who tried to stop the friction, was also pushed to the ground. As many people had gathered there by then, the accused had left the spot, duly posing death threats to the victims of the attack.

A case about the incident had been filed at Shirva police station. The then Shirva police sub-inspector, Makalakar R Naik, had filed a charge sheet. The third JMFC court which heard the case, after considering evidences and statements of witnesses, arrived at the conclusion that the crime has been proved. Judge of the court, Ram Prashanth, handed down 42 months of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15,000 to the accused.
