Swachh Mangaluru - City buses to have dust bins soon

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 5: The city bus owners association here has come forward to contribute in its own way in the matter of supporting 'Swachh Bharat' concept coined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It has planned to introduce dust bins in all the city buses in phases soon.

The city has about 360 city buses plying to various destinations from 6 am to 10.30 pm every day. About a lac of people use these bus services and 25 percent of them are students. Therefore, maintaining cleanliness within the buses is of paramount importance.

City bus passengers are often seen tossing skins of toffees they eat, bus tickets, fruit peels, eatables, paper, bottles etc either inside the bus or out. This creates nuisance for others besides polluting the environment. To stop this, the bus owners have come forward to provide dust bins. This experiment had been introduced in some long route buses like the Karkala - Beltangady - Kundapur - Dharmasthala, and some other routes where the passenger response has been found o be good.

President of the association, Dilraj Alva, said that initially dust bins would be provided in five buses running on No. 27 route and this will be extended to more buses with passage of time. He said that it is the duty of passengers to keep their environment including buses clean. A conductor, who has kept dust bin in his bus successfully since a year, has appreciated the passengers for being cleanliness-conscious and putting waste into the dustbins. He however cautions that maintaining the dustbin clean is also equally important.

Yes, it's a thoughtful and good move, will teach us good habits to drop any thrash and not throw it overboard. Yet, it will not control a very dirty and unhealthy habit, frequently encountered and pointed out,,,SPITTING....from moving and stationary buses/vehicles..... Requests, that RTO arrange to place notices that "Spitting from Bus is a crime" only has fallen on deaf ears. Don't think people will be allowed to spit in the on board bins???? The authorities must have a board in all buses, it will at least support the conscientious objectors and bring better discipline. Thanks.

Great move by the private bus owners! It would be better if two more things are resolved
One, please ban smokeless tobacco by drivers, conductors and passengers or keep a spittoon near the driver's seat. Secondly, get all the buses emitting toxic carbon monoxide off the road and stop bribing the RTO officials (who are blind to the offenders) if you really care about the people of Mangaluru.

Unless perception of the city people doesn't change fixing dustbin inside the public transport useless.

This weird experiment may be the first in the world. I don't think no passengers will prefer to sit next to the skip filled with chewed tobacco and bubble gum.

What lacks in this buses should be old age boarding/alighting low floor, First Aid kit, Airconditioned coach, women only partition like Tamil Nadu in the front and so on need immediate attention.

Above all behavior of the ticketing staff need changes.

Do you get ticket in Dubai Bus, still you have to recharge your card.
If Mangalore city bus is charging you more then you can object . what you do with taking ticket.
it is private operated bus. No inspector will come to check if you have taken ticket or you will get fined.

Smart buses in mlore - use plastic card, exclude these cards payment mode from tax recovery surely it'll help people and the bus operators.

Bus operator will have to bear the amount of POS.
Using it for a long run could benefit everybody

    Praveen,

In Dubai, we cannot step on public buses without swipin our card because any time an inspector will come with a device to catch anybody travelling without making a payment . Upon getting caught, the fine is ten times more.

In our city buses, if we take a ticket, the payment becomes legal as owner's incomes, on which he must pay tax. Else it may end up as conductor's tip or owner's
unaccountable wealth (black money) . Therefore, help to bring up a discipline by asking for a ticket.
