Udupi, Nov 20: A mega walkathon was organised by Lions International to mark World Diabetes Week. District Lions 317 C in association with Udupi district administration, District health department, Udupi district Armature Athletics association and other organisations, held the event on November 18.
A formal stage function was held at Board High School which was inaugurated by Dr Aryan Bhat.
Addressing the gathering he said, “Diabetic patients will get know when the disease occupies 50% of the body. Most of the Indians and Chinese have become victims of genetic diabetes and the number of victims is increasing. If we change our life style, we can try and avoid the disease. Today, children are enjoying life without exercise. If the same lifestyle continues, the younger generation will be victim to diabetes by 2025. A man has to walk 10,000 steps every day. That is the secret.”
Ln Dr Thallur Shivaram Shetty, District Lions governor, “Around 442 million adults suffer from diabetes worldwide. There is a need to create awareness among public.”
The mega walkathon commenced from Kinninmulky to Board High School.
N M Hegde, deputy governor, Dr Nery Cornolio, regional president, Shridhar Shenav, Leo Shastri Shetty, Ravindra Shetty, Ashok Kumar, Balakrishna Hegde, Leesa, P A Bhat, S T Karkera, Chandrakala and others were present.
