Udupi, Nov 24: "During the last week's phone-in programme, complaints had been received about vehicles using shrill horns in violation of rules in Udupi and Kundapur talauks. To regulate this problem, a week's special drive was launched and 405 buses which were found to be using shrill horns were fined. If this violation is repeated, we will service notices too," said district superintendent of police (SP), Laxman Nimbargi.

He added that the complaint by a citizen in three consecutive phone-ins about a dry tree by the roadside near Yadthady, Brahmavar that was about to get uprooted on the road, the issue was taken up with the department concerned, and the tree was removed. He stated that as desired, reflectors have been provided near Chowlikere.

The SP said that a total of 1,411 cases including gambling, use of tobacco, drugs, drunken driving, use of cellphones when driving, riding without helmets, shrill horns, were reported.

A person from Kundapur called the SP to inform that middlemen have been harassing people too much at the office of the regional transport officer at Udupi. He complained that even after application was submitted online and the office was personally visited, middlemen are given first preference, making others to wait for hours. The SP said he will bring this to the notice of the deputy commissioner and others but asked the complainant to take up the same with the Anti Corruption Bureau.

The SP said that relating to operation of Matka business in the district, proposals have been sent to the district administration, recommending externment of ten persons. He said that the DC will take a decision on the issue. He also said that 11 such persons had been externed form the district for three months in February and March and that the others would be sent out once the decision of the DC is received.

Another citizen called to say that because of misuse of SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act against him by certain people, he is facing the risk of losing his government job. The SP said that if what he says is true, there will not be prospect of losing his job.

A total of 21 calls were received during the phone-in programme on Friday. The issues related to differences between government and private buses in Siddapur bus stand, tippers creating problems in Udyavar - Padukere road, illegal sand mining, Matka, people throwing garbage on MGM - Chakrateertha roadside, illegal stone quarrying, dogs creating problems for walkers, high beam lights creating problems, FSL report on unnatural death of brother and many others.
