Brady selected to Pro Bowl for record 14th time

Bangkok, Dec 19 (IANS): New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has been selected for the National Football League's end of season honours event the Pro Bowl for the 14th time, equalling a NFL record.

Brady was among the names chosen to the NFL's end of season all-star game unveiled on Tuesday night, reports Efe.

He joins quarterback Peyton Manning, tight end Tony Gonzalez, offensive lineman Bruce Matthews and defensive tackle Merlin Olsen as the only five players in the history of the NFL to be selected to the Pro Bowl.

The Patriots had just two players selected for the event, to be held in Orlando on January 27, with the other being cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

The Los Angeles Chargers lead the list of teams with the highest number of Pro Bowl selections with seven, after veteran quarterback Philip Rivers, centre Mike Pouncey, running back Melvin Gordon, wide receiver Keenan Allen, defensive end Melvin Ingram and safeties Derwin James and Adrian Phillips made the list.

This is the Chargers' highest number of Pro Bowlers since 2008, when 10 of their players travelled to Hawaii for the event.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers will have six players each, while the New Orleans Saints, the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys will be sending five players each to the Pro Bowl

Saints quarterback Drew Brees was selected to his 12th Pro Bowl, and is now tied in ninth for most Pro Bowl selections in NFL history.

Emerging stars such as Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Giants' rookie running back Saquon Barkley and Denver Broncos' undrafted running back Phillip Lindsay were selected for the first time.

Players are voted into the all-star game by coaches, players and fans.
