Mangalore, Jan 22: A mini school bus carrying children to a school being run by Raj Academy from Pallipady to Ganjimath near Gurpur sped down a deep cliff after veering off the road at around 8.15 am near Karingala Gundikumeru. The driver of the bus Nagesh lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a steep curve, because of rash driving, eyewitnesses said.

The bus then rushed down the hostile terrain, bumping into rocks and mowing down plants and small trees, before coming to a halt with a thud precariously after a coconut tree located near the house of Monappa Poojary, located about 200-feet down the road, and stopped its descent. People in the house who were in the courtyard rushed into the home on hearing the huge sound of the vehicle rushing down the road towards their house. The house suffered some damage due to the accident.

The bus had only six children at that time, Sameeksha and Rishali, both studying in first standard, Dhanush, Harshita and Dhruva M Shetty, UKG and Maneesha, studying in the fourth standard of the school. All the children except Sameeksha suffered injuries. Three children with serious injuries are being treated in a local hospital.

The speed at which the bus approached the road bend and the ups and downs it went through while going down the cliff, made those who witnessed the accident to think that no one would survive the accident. Miraculously, no lives were lost in the incident. The accident brought back memories of the tragic accident that occurred in Ulaibettu some months back in which a few children lost their lives.

Fitting a speed governor wouldnt have helped!!A speed governor will limit your speed to 50kph.Am sure this van must have been at around that speed only. School buses should have seat belts, properly maintained tires!!

These children are God’s gift to their parents for the second time after birth. Our administration knows very well that people will blame only the drivers, and that’s the reason we do not have quality roads. By writing this I am not defending rash drivers. This accident could have been easily avoided, had there been strong high sheet metal railings on steep turning and deep cliff. We in India have no safe roads. Let us pay our taxes quietly, and the responsible people will take air ride with that money and kill us on these bumpy unsafe roads.

Thanks to god, nothing serious. Once again our traffic police failed to control these kinds of worst accidents. I strongly suggest these kinds of reckless drivers should be punished and at least they must be jailed for 2years. School authority must be very strict before appointing a driver for their school bus. I know that in India after any worst incidents they never think about actions or precautions.

Request to all such drivers, please dont drive crazy when you have people depending upon you. Drive in your own style and speed when you are alone and far from residential areas.
