Bengaluru, Feb 28: Principal secretary in the department of primary and secondary education, S R Umashankar, said that second PU classes will begin on May 6 this year.

Although the teaching staff have been resisting efforts to begin PU classes early, citing scorching heat and other issues, the government has taken this decision in the interests of the students.

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, Umashankar said that the chief minister has given his nod to issue an order on these lines. "For the students, second PU happens to be an important phase. Private schools begin classes early and also provide coaching. Our aim is that government PU college students should not lag behind. The lecturerers should understand our concern," he said.

He further noted that most of the students studying in government schools are poor, and that there is a need to brighten their future. He agreed that temperature, particularly in north Karnataka districts, would be high then. He suggested that in such cases, timing of classes can be modified. He asked the teaching staff to extend support even though it results in some inconveniences for them.
