Mangalore: Bajrangdal Takes out Bike Rally in City against Valentine's Day Celebrations

Mangalore, Feb 13: The local unit of Bajrang Dal took out a motor bike rally through the city roads on Friday February 13, to urge and convince the people not to celebrate Valentine's Day. The motor bike rally started from P V S Circle and went through SDM College, Saibeen Complex, Kadri, Mallikatta, St Agnes, St Aloysius college before culminating in University College.

District level leaders of the Dal including Shivanand Mendon, district assistant convener, Balakrishna Shetty, Krishnamurthy, Vinay Shetty, Sharan Pumpwell and Vasudev Shenoy were present. Before the start of the rally, the leaders addressed the participants and the people, asking them not to celebrate festivals that promotes a behaviour that is unacceptable to Indian culture. They also requested the activists to maintain peace while seeking peoples' cooperation to desist from celebrating Valentine's Day on Saturday February 14.

Bajrangdal said, that the Valentine's Day celebrations are guided purely by global  commercial interests,  and a ploy aimed at coaxing the girls to stray out from their traditional path in the name of celebrating the occasion. The Day neither has any emotional value nor any principles or philosophy attached to it, they argued. The youth need to understand that this is just an occasion to enable hotels, resorts, bars and pubs to make money and not to strengthen emotional bonding, it said. The day also is aimed at promoting luxurious living, moral turpitude and use of drugs, they said.

More than 100 motor bikes took part in the rally and the rallyists waved flags as they made their way through the city streets. They also distributed pamphlets to the people, urging them to tread the path of patriotism, help the poor, follow the ideals of Swami Vivekananda and freedom fighters.

Is this taking a rally on Motor Bikes in western outfits relates to Indian culture? Dear BD, Sena or any activists, please ensure that if at all you guys want to preserve Indian culture, do not wear pants, shirts, T-Shirts, Jeans, Skirts, tops etc. as all this is not Indian culture or traditional styles. If you are really interested in Indian culture, please have your rally in By-Cycles or Bullock- Carts or walk from Bantwal to Mangalore where our ancestors used to come walking to Mangalore to sell home grown vegetables - after selling the vegetables in the central market, they used to walk back again to Bantwal.

Follow in their footsteps and show your real Indian culture. Also stop running naked or semi-naked every 12 years in India in the name of "Kumba Mela" (shame, shame) - If you think running naked is indian culture, then all westerners would like to come to India and do so - So make sure first what is the Indian culture.

While I agree totally that India being a democratic country and that people are at liberty to follow what they feel is right, still Ii dont think blindly aping the west will yield any thing good, while Ii see people comparing this to other essential things like wearning shirts and trousers and not dhoti and kurta, let me tell you it is not a SIN TO EMULATE THE POSITIVE ASPECTS OF ANY CULTURE AND SO FAR

AS IT enhances or creates a positive value to the overall bearing, while somethign like St.Valentines day which was not heard off 20 years back makes females from the other conservative families to create unnecessary tension to thier parents, can be clearly avoided.

What a joke!!!.. These people are crying for Indian culture!!! and doing moral policing.. They even do not know how to obey the law of the land.. Look at the pictures carefully..most of the people participated in the rally were not wearing helmet even though the helmet is mandatory in the state of Karnataka... I do not think our policemen/RTO took action against them..

There are so many incidents in the history of India about Love. We can give example of Nala-Damayanti, Dushyantha-Shakunthala, Shri Ramachandra-Seethe, etc. Also we can mention about Saleem-Anarkali, Heer-Ranja. When we have so many successful stories in India, why we have to follow the Western Culture? In India, we celebrate every day as mother’s day, father’s day, and we love our parents, sisters, brothers, friends, and our wife too. We don’t need a special day to convey our love and affection to them. Everyday is equal to us and we celebrate 365 days in a year with same love, affection, respect too. Now a day this Valentines Day ahs become fashion, its just show off, nothing else. It’s the day to make more business for the Hotels, Gift Shops, Pubs, etc. It’s totally against to our Indian culture. We have to accept good qualities from other cultures if it’s really helpful to us and benefit to us. But, not these Western Culture which is spoiling our Indian Culture.

In the given photographs there is a lonely woman on a two wheeler and that too without a helmet. What is she going to teach her kids? Do not follow any traffic rules? Join the gangsters and ruin the country just like her? A woman riding a two wheeler amidst of so many men, Is that an Indian culture. I thought these guys women should hide themselves because they belong to the 16th century, where there was no education for women. Wake up, you goons, educate yourselves and your children and bring out the true Indian culture.

Do you guys thinking these BD, SRS really aware of Indian, Hindu culture?? And why this year they want to rally, day off, strike harder than past years?? My personal answer is 1) Election is coming up and BJP ruling in the state (No doubt BJP Government is funding for these goons people). 2) For them Valentine Day is the only way to protect than other foreign culture in India. 3) Muthalik and group might jealous to youth who roaming on bikes, gardens, pubs, discos with their heights, luxury, royalty. Let us (youth) enjoy with our money, freedom. We obviously aware of our life and our parents. Wake up guys these groups are not paying, feeding us.. Let them die with their culture, politics. We can not effort to listen these groups in this competitive, computerized 21st century world. We have lot more goals to achieve... cheers

If you put the same arguement these are not western culture as well.Do you know how victorian era people dressed in west? They too went in horse carriage. So this kind of arguement is very hollow in my opinion

Instead please use bullock carts and horse drwn carriages. Also please wear loin cloth instead of pants and shirt. No sunglasses are needed. I say this because you are going against your own teachings by dressing like westerners. Please be a good example and dress like true indians. Also, please do not use precious fuel by driving around when the economy is bad.

Dear Mamatha-Mangalore,Nagesh Nayak-Bangalore and all others who support Indian Culture-Do not try to push India to stoneage.India is developing and as a process of development changes in behaviour, living style and the way we celebrate our events do change. The way we dress has changed, the way we conduct our marriages has changed, the former rich comforts have now become necessareies. As a mark of development culture is likely to change as people move around in search of livelihood. The world has changed so much, Rain forests have been cut down to build houses, agricultural land has been industrialized, sea shores have been developed as islands.Communication system has changed-imagine in1947 people would not have had access to websites as we do.That does'nt mean that we are lucky. That is the need of the hour. Coming back to your support to all these protests- NEED OF THE HOUR IS TO PROTECT LIFE [protect the human being]and not culture. All these people who involve in these activities are disguised politicians and not true religious people. True religious people will try to bring in change by true sacrifice,by living the the ideals themselves.Tell your friends if they wish to do some thing good to the society let them start a movement to erradicate abortions, povery, illiteracy , child marriage and suppression of girls and women.WHERE WERE ALL THESE PEOPLE{ including Raj Thakery's men} when MUMBAI was attacked by the Pakistani terriorsts on november 26 ,2008.Let these people fight against the evil of present day- Terriorsm.Let us live as united Indians. Life is so short and presently all of us have hundreds problems in life. There is no time to worrry about culture and religion.LET US WORRY ABOUT LIFE.Jai India

A few years back, hundred of Swami's had a motor cycle parade, in New Delhi totally naked, because that was the ultimate form of self-denial and close to the state of nirvana. That picture was in the western publications. Let the unemployed youth bring world attention by motor cycle parade. Why they want to wear western clothing, let them do the Indian way everything to proclaim the great Indian culture of morality. As human beings, we all must try to take the good side of all cultures and nations, but when we are adamant about our own culture, we are advancing to the wrong direction.

Our culture is not wearing leather belt that may be made of cow’s skin, that’s western culture, our culture is nada. Our culture is not wearing leather shoes that’s again western, ours is wooden slippers.

This Baj Rang dal and ram sena are warning all of them not 2celebarate Vday which is ridiculous.do they know what their chldren might be doing wiithout their knowledge. We dont have to enjoy Vday but we are fools to sit inside coz in reality these people itself will surely enjoy Vday in a place where they are unknown or go to a pub where they are not known. Will we go to spy those jobless people. They are also humans and every human being has feelings if they dont then they are BORN CANNIBALS... such people will be taught lifetime lessons by their own children

I agree with Mr ayyar, Police needs to take action only if he they wear helmet when they ride a bike and also they shouldnt be corrupt... I want to ask Mr ayyar whether he had followed all the rules laid down by the goverment.. I bet you didnt and hence you dont have the right to comment.. If you have problem then comment those persons who spit on the road and those who spill garbage. People are taking protest against the save our culture if you cant support them then you dont have to comment.. Jai Hind

Educationisthe Key. Uneducated brats rallying for aeducated cause?? Nayaks Tradition, culture and country feling seems to be pretty weak footed. No police on scene?? Police should be guiding the morcha as we have seen all the other morchas except this one... May be police are the ones without helments on bikes and in civil dress..any identifications?? A motor Bike rally when we talk of green revolution and going green and Bio fuel ?? One thing is sure if they meant as they said the teachings of swami Vivekananda are a way these guys should follow and not teach others. The idea may be good but often we see clubs and swords in the hands of these groups?? Do they practice violence also?? They do not need police protection??

I request local administration headed by DC Ponnuraj to take action against byke riders without helmet. It is not safe to ride without helmet. Daijiworld photos are enough proof. Please book them according to the law. law should be applicable for everyone.

Dear editor, I am not against the democracy. Everyone has right to protest. But, I challenge, if current State Govt is honest and straightforward then, please book all the bike riders for riding without helmet. It is offense, and if those RTO guys can put fine (or take bribe) from poor riders of Mangalore, then why not from these protestors? This is open challenge to the local admin and govt to book on the riders those who ride without helmet !!
