Mangalore, Feb 27:
Prof S S Prabhudeva, principal, M S Ramaiah Medical College Bangalore said on Friday February 27, that concept-oriented nursing is very much essential. Teaching methods should be updated with the aid of new technologies, he advised.

He was addressing the delegates of the national nursing conference held at the Conference Hall of the Father Muller Medical College Hospitla here. A two-day convention is being organized at the said venue, under the theme ‘Nurse Educator: Care-Taker to Career Maker’. "Universal love and kindness are absolutely essential to enhance the holistic nature of nursing. The syllabus should be updated after every two years. An educator should take the help of new technologies to improve the standard of teaching along with updating the wisdom on the subjects”, he added.

He also opined that the inclusion of global current affairs is relevant in nursing. The profession is totally dominated by women. A woman plays pivotal role in care taking, he noted.

Leena Rodrigues, principal, KIMS, Kasargod expressed the view that psychology should be included as a subject for the nursing students in order to help them to improve their quality of service. She also stressed on affecting changes in teaching method in nursing schools.

Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, FMCI, Fr Muller College of Nursing principal and the organizing chairperson Sr Jacintha D’Souza, administrator Fr Denis D’Sa and Fr Muller School of Nursing principal Sr Winnifred D'Souza were also present.

Sucy George, organizing secretary proposed the vote of thanks.

well, it's good have such conference. As Ophilia said it should be an internal call and not by force. I remember when I was nursing student my tutor said nursing is not a profession "it is a vocation" and I totally agree with this point. To reach the international standard level the hospitals should provide continuous education to all the nursing staff on yearly basis eg: self learning packages, competency sign off by the educators, inservice education, case studies ect.It helps to improve our clinicl skills/knowledge to provide quality patient care.

It is nice to see Fr Mullers conducting these type of conferences. I agree with Leena Rodrigues. I would like to add to this. Nursing profession should be an internal call. One should not take up nursing or Medicine due to parents pressure.
