Mangaluru: Online fraud - two found guilty, jailed

Mangaluru, Mar 29: The third JMFC court here, through a judgement delivered on Thursday March 28, sentenced two persons to 21 months imprisonment along with fine, after finding them guilty of defrauding a person from here to the extent of lacs of rupees after getting in contact with the victim through internet.

The persons found guilty are Laltan Mavia (36) from Aizwal district and Kuf Yoyi (33) from Churchand in Manipur.

The two had contacted Violet D'Souza, who resides within the limits of Ullal police station here, in the guise of her friend, Goodson Wilfred who currently lives in London. She was told that an amount of Rs 28,000 pound sterlings would be sent to her in currency form by parcel along with gift. In the guise of money needed to clear this parcel, the fraudsters had collected Rs 21,58,200 through their bank accounts.

A case about this fraud was registered in Ullal police station on May 31, 2007. The police who investigated the case, arrested the accused from New Delhi on June 11, 2017 and produced in the court. The accused remained in judicial custody as bail was denied to them. The court which heard the case found that the charge of fraud against the accused has been proved. Hence they were handed down 21 months of imprisonment along with fine.

Public prosecutor Mohan Kumar B, argued the case on behalf of the prosecution. Investigation officer of the case, Gopikrishna K R, had filed charge sheet in the case.
