Indian satellite destruction created 400 pieces of debris: NASA

Washington, Apr 2 (AFP): The head of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) today branded India's destruction of one of its satellites a "terrible thing" that had created 400 pieces of orbital debris and led to new dangers for astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Jim Bridenstine was addressing employees of NASA after India shot down a low-orbiting satellite in a missile test to prove it was among the world's advanced space powers.

Not all of the pieces were big enough to track, Bridenstine explained. "What we are tracking right now, objects big enough to track - we're talking about 10 centimetres or bigger - about 60 pieces have been tracked."

The satellite was destroyed at a relatively low altitude of 300 kilometres, well below the ISS and most satellites in orbit.

But 24 of the pieces "are going above the apogee of the International Space Station," said Bridenstine.

"That is a terrible, terrible thing to create an event that sends debris at an apogee that goes above the International Space Station," he continued, adding: "That kind of activity is not compatible with the future of human spaceflight."

"It's unacceptable and NASA needs to be very clear about what its impact to us is."

The US military tracks objects in space to predict the collision risk for the ISS and for satellites. They are currently tracking 23,000 objects larger than 10 centimetres.

That includes about 10,000 pieces of space debris, of which nearly 3,000 were created by a single event: a Chinese anti-satellite test in 2007 at 530 miles from the surface.

As a result of the Indian test, the risk of collision with the ISS has increased by 44 per cent over 10 days, Bridenstine said.

But the risk will dissipate over time as much of the debris will burn up as it enters the atmosphere.

For all who wants to give negative comment on this issue just watch Phokaran movie.. You can see How American satellites take round of the world and take a look on activities of all the nations.
India was scared to do the test at that time.
Why a strong country should scare of any countries... If its American satellite if its doing wrong against our country it should be crack down

There was a good video about earth. Billions of year earth survived, irrespective of everything. Meteor strike, Earthquakes, Tsunami, you name it and earth has gone through it already.

The only difference is humans or life on earth may be extinct again and may be for a billion years.

If we have to protect life on earth and our future generations, it is important to avoid things which are avoidable. And do things in such a way it is largely nature friendly.

We had this capability since 2012, but we did not go for such tests, because congress, you can say lethargic, but it is sensible govt. They wanted to keep it as strategic military secret and may be on the other hand, giving the scientists necessary time invent to avoid limit space debris.

But, our chowkidar has only one thing in mind... Election and winning election, as if India never going to survive without BJP, when it survived millions of years.

Sir, I'm not blaming ISRO, but its their job to find the consequences of such space programs. We honor ISRO for their great work, but the same time we should criticize if something irresponsible happens. I also blame current government and thier advisers for not doing the proper homework.

NASA has created tonnes of Space Junk, so they are saying that all is fine, but dont create new junk. Also they say the new junk will decay in a few weeks and will be eliminated. So doesn't that indicate ISRO did its homework correctly & like in their news statement, the debris will decay over a few weeks and be eliminated. I dont see any problem with this.

Naveen do you think ISRO could do anything in this? They knew about this long ago and that's why did not conduct the anti-satellite missile test so far even though it was ready with us from 2012. But now it has been done to satisfy the ego and increase the PR of one single individual who has been destroying the autonomy of every single institution of our country. It's the govt of India which took this decision for sure and everyone knows it was taken keeping in mind upcoming LS polls and that's why PM of the country chose to appear on television to announce this. If you question these sorts of things even with logic and facts, you are termed anti-national, Congeee, Commiee, Gulam, terrorist and then offered free one-way ticket to Pakistan. When questioning itself is termed crime, can we expect answers?
