Sullia: Family supplies diesel to get mobile signal - conveys information of death

Daijiworld Media Network - Sullia (SP)

Sullia, Apr 9: A person from here wanted to convey information about the death of a local to some relatives. He found to his dismay that there was no mobile signal. He then went to the telephone exchange with diesel. With this diesel, the generator of the telephone exchange was operated. With this, the person began to get mobile signal, with the help of which he could pass on information about the death to his relative.

This incident happened in Kalmakaru village in the taluk.

Venkataramana, resident of Kinnana House in Kalmakaru village, had died two days back due to ill health. His family wanted to convey this information to others, but it was found to the family's dismay that the cell phone was not functional as the there was no mobile signal. This village is served by only one cell phone operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) which is owned by the government. Monappa, a local, got to know that the mobile signal was not in operation as the generator of the BSNL did not have diesel. He went to the office with diesel, poured diesel into the generator, and saw to it that the generator was operated. He then began to get signal, following which he could inform relatives about Venkataramana's death.

People of various villages like Kollamogru, Harihara Pallathadka, Balugodu, Nadugal, Yenekallu, Kalmakaru, Madappady etc are totally dependent on BSNL for mobile phone services. Although there is BSNL mobile tower in the region, many a time it does not function properly. Whenever power goes off, the generator of BSNL is not operated for want of fuel. It is said that because of losses, the company has not been able to buy diesel for its generators.

People who are entirely dependent on BSNL for cell phone services are suffering as a result. Recently the people had come together to hold a protest against this pathetic state of affairs, but on account of tahsildar's intervention, the plan was shelved. He had then called meeting of officials of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company and BSNL in a bid to find a solution to this problem and instructed them to see that emergency services are always available. It is said that he had also warned that the officials will face punishment if there are complaints from the general public. But the locals say that there has not been any positive effect on the functioning of BSNL or its officials. They have demanded to act against those officials who are responsible for the current situation.

It is said that the local people have proposed to install a donation box in order for the people to contribute towards diesel cost so that BSNL would be able to start the generator whenever electricity supply goes off by using money collected in the box.

India is the only country who wants to keep the whole network backbone of the government and departments with private players instead of securing it with their own backbone like many other countries. Most of our politicians doesn't even know anything about national security and future issues that may arise in future due to private players controlling national IT backbone. Most of the government entities are forced into loses by not providing them money on time and eventually handover costly infrastructure to private players over a period of time. Very soon under Modi's government Reliance Jio will take over all these and will emerge as largest provider of Internet and Mobility to start showing their true face. It started with Mobility of Railways employees and very soon it will be government employees mobile plans. I cannot understand how they say Jio is better when compared to BSNL even though 6 to 7 hours of the day MyJio number will be out of coverage despite of me staying in Bangalore City.

Chowkidar PM is talking Digital India ........, Everything based on aadhar card, cashless transactions....... list goes on. But cannot provide basic mobile signal to villages then how can you do work with government departments using mobile. Yesterday in leading newspaper there was article where a poor girl from rural village could not apply to a government job because there is no mobile signal in her village as jobs must be applied online and OTP is sent through mobile. Very sad state of affairs. He supports his friend M.A's Geo which is killing BSNL and others by providing cheap data in cities only .Geo does not provide service in rural areas as it is loss making proportion. Having rich cream and leftover for BSNL.

Politics aside BSNL & Air India are the two institutions managed poorly and previous governments done nothing to get them back to control . It's highly impossible to collapse such a large companies who enjoyed monopoly in their respective fields . Why blame anyone now ...

One of the main reasons for the failure of these mammoth public sector undertakings is the recruitment of wrong people to wrong management and operationsl positions based on caste reservations policies adopted by the government. Only 25% are productive supporting 75% unproductive staff. When you visit any BSNL office and the staff at the counter operating the computer keyboard, you feel pity on them searching for key buttons. What more one can expect from such people.

I am sorry to read this story of poor villagers in modern India. It was a same story with us before cell phone entry . Line men demanded bribe, arrogant reply , lethergic attitude. ..what not?
Now ,entire senario is changed. We have different service providers with best offers with best minimum price. We enjoy 4 G without any problem,
But BSNL is still with 2 G only. We are least bothered about line man, staff etc.
People of Sullya better to contact private cell phone service providers to get best value for their money. .

This does not come as a surprise at all on public sector undertaking BSNL's functioning. This is how the rural exchanges of BSNL function with age old scrap equipment thrown out from metro city exchanges which are then installed at rural exchanges. When there is no power supply from mescom exchanges go down with no backup power facility. No money to supply diesel for the generators and no batteries to power backup. This is the state of affairs of this once arrogant and lazy monopoly service provider.

Private operators of telephony services will not install towers in areas where they will not make a profit.

As much as Government services are bad, as they are not for profit, they will have the transmission towers even in more remote areas of just a handful of users.

Will the Government give some special incentives to private operators to reach out to the remote areas?

BSNL is on its last legs.

Government cannot afford loss making BSNL, their inefficient and lethargic staff can't compete with private tele communication firms .... Irony is what these private firms don't install signal towers in rural areas, tower's maintenance and running expenditure is costing a lot and users in those areas are very few ....

BSNL personnel never perform their duties on time on receiving our complaints. For any repairs have to wait 8/10.days. As a result many have discontinued their land-line services. They were acting they are monopoly in this field. Now they are saying loss. BSNL collect money more than required on the land-line and Wi-Fi as well on mobiles.

It’s high time BSNL windup mobile services. Instead of competing with private operators they should revert to their original service by improving landline services such as STD-ISD at reduced rates, free caller ID, internet lines to PC users, etc.
