Mangalore, Mar 30: The 'Mother India' service bus plying between Iruvail and Moodbidri veered off the road about 1.5 kms from Iruvail at around 8.10 am on Monday March 30 and tumbled down a roadside pit.  Almost all the passengers in the bus were injured in the accident, but most of them escaped with minor nics and cuts. Nearly 40 students, who were bound for their SSLC examination centre in Moodbidri  for the first day's examination, were hurt. While about 30 of them were provided treatment and allowed to proceed to attend their examinations, around ten students whose injuries are of serious nature, could not attend the examination. Seven to eight people, who have suffered multiple injuries and who require advanced treatment for the injuries suffered to their faces, heads etc., have been referred to hospitals in the city.

Miraculously, the bus came to a standstill after barging into the roadside pit at great speed. If it had turned turtle, possibility of which was near certainty considering the gravity of the accident, several lives would have been lost. It is thought, that about 80 to 85 passengers, most of them standing, were travelling in the bus when the accident occurred. The spot of the accident is located on a steep road curve.

The driver of the bus also has sustained injuries and is being treated at Alva's hospital here. If what the eye witnesses say are to be believed, the bus was being rashly driven, although there is no concrete evidence about what could have been the real reason for the accident. The bus was brimming with passengers, both because people were returning to the city after spending time at their native places during the week end that coincided with Ugadi celebrations, and also that students from several villages were to appear for their SSLC examination in Moodbidri centre.

All the injured were treated in Alva's and G V Pai Hospital in Moodbidri.  Alva's hospital staff, G V Pai Hospital staff, policemen, education office personal, local MLA Abhaychandra Jain, BJP leader Jagadish Adhikari, zilla panchayat president K P Sucharita Shetty etc., got fully involved with relief activities and ensuring that the students attended their examinations as far as possible. All the concerned departments have geared up to the task of providing relief to the victims of the accident.

Raghuvir Shenoy, trustee of a local school and rickshaw owner, selflessly helped the injured to be shifted to hospital and also to take the students to  their examination centre.

District level education officers also visited the spot and the examination centres and ensured that the injured students were facilitated to appear for the examination in spite of the accident, injuries and consequent delay involved in reaching the centre.

Sad to hear about this accident where students had to miss their exams. Authorities must seriously think of arranging re exams for these kids. They prepare so well, go through all the pain to travel to the exam centre, I don't know what to tell. When we go on holidays we travel in these buses with horrible drivers, no rules, no gap between the traffic. Absolute mess. Do these children need to take the brunt?. Shame on the ministry who can't even set some standard driving rules. My kids don't want to travel in these crappy busses.

When these type of accidents take place first thing we come to the conclusion that reckless driving by the Drivers. Here the question when the fees are charged by the RTO for driving licence and its renewal what are the guidelines they follow. Secondly what type of quality education they render to the drivers before issuing driving licence. Are the drivers  given licnece only to drive or taught to drive with responsibility as they own the lives of citizens traveling in the bus and vehicles & passengers on the road. Another question to be noted here the reasonability and capability of the RTO dept. as a whole. Do our RTO has the TQM( Total Quality Management) and under what capacity and what capability they perform the duties. When the system itself is inadequate then why just blame only the drivers. After all we are also part to it indirectly and should bear the responsibility for the wrong, failed system.

It is sad there are lot of accidents. Present traffic rules if followed properly is sufficient if the corruption(Bribing)is taken care of.From RTO Office to Traffic police every person accepts bribe & turns blind eye towards violaters of traffic rules, due to which these bus drivers speed up to recover the amount they bribed,so root cause is these officials who has to be punished severly, then all will go good.

Thank God, for no life lost. Accidents could be avoided if there is speed limit and radar system where the speed could be captured, like how it is in advanced countries, so that those drivers who cross the speed limit could be caught. Otherwise there is no way out. Even tho' they have witnessed so many road accidents, they drive very rashly. There should also be a limit of passengers travelling in the buses, whether private or public. I avoid travelling in packed buses. Even though there is no space inside for standing, yet they take more and more. It is very important to have speed limit and limited standing number travellers in it. Those who violate the rules should be punished. They are responsible for people's lives.

we have a very bad habit of blaming instead give sugessions what can be done, no-one wants to make an accident purposely, accidents are accidents it happens, i'm sure even if it was a KSRTC bus it would have happened the same, can u guys see the road width, the curve etc, why dont you guys instead put pressure on the departments for better roads etc, instead blame the poor driver.

To prevent such accidents happening in future, even the minor accidents and traffic offenses committed by bus drivers should be recorded in their driving licenses. There should be accountability in public services.

All students for the S.S.L.C whether injured or not but who were in the bus have to be given the exams together when all recover and the question of losing one year should not be in the picture at all. Pls note even the non injured students should be given leeway due to the psychological trauma they have been through.

I hope the Govt. looks into this matter and allow all those students to have private exams and brighten their future. Lets us all raise our voice so that a year will not be spoiled to those students, their life's & their families. I pray for the speedy recover for all the injured, espically to those students who are appearing for their next exams....!

The RTO/munciplaity are equally to be blamed with the careless driver. This patch of road has seen numerous accidents for years, they should be settiing up roadside barriers or widening/straightening the road. God forbid, the next big disaster will be the Nethravati bridge. Its high time government took action to build new bridge or do proper maintenance of the existing one.
