New Delhi, May 6: In a significant development that has sent ripples across political and mining circles, the CBI Special Court in Delhi has convicted legislator Gali Janardhana Reddy in the high-profile Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) illegal mining case. The court has sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
The verdict marks a major milestone in a case that has spanned over a decade and involved some of the most influential names in politics and bureaucracy.
The illegal mining activities came under the scanner in 2009 following a request by the then Andhra Pradesh government. Subsequently, under the directive of the central government, the CBI initiated a thorough investigation.

The agency filed its first charge sheet in 2011 and followed it with supplementary charge sheets that named nine accused, including senior IAS officers, former ministers, and close aides of Reddy.
Among those charged along with Janardhana Reddy were B V Srinivas Reddy, Mehfuz Ali Khan, Obulapuram Mining Company, former mines director V D Rajagopal, former IAS officer Kripanandam, and ex-minister Sabita Indra Reddy. The charges invoked several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The trial, closely monitored by the Supreme Court, was directed to conclude by May-end. Final arguments concluded last month, paving the way for today’s decisive ruling.
With the court now delivering its verdict, Janardhana Reddy — once considered an influential political figure and mining baron — finds himself on the wrong side of the law. This case is seen as a stern message against corruption and illegal exploitation of natural resources.
