Mumbai, Jun 20: Civic officials have informed citizens that the water reserve stock has enough water to last until July 31 and that there will be no additional water cut in the city. Despite the delay of monsoons in the state which is causing depleting water levels in the lakes, the officials have assured citizens and asked them not to worry.
The Upper Vaitarana reserve stock released water to the live storage amounting to almost 60,000 million litre. The useable quantity of water in the Upper Vaitarana has now come to only 10,000 million litre. On June 19 last year, the amount of water in the live stock amounted to 2,10,494 million litre. However, as of June 19 this year, the amount of water has reduced to 87.251 million litre.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, however, have stated that there is no need to worry because they have not used the water from the Bhatsa reserve for which they have a permissible limit of 1 lac litre. Based on this, the officials have guaranteed that the 1,10,000 litre water stock from both the Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarana stock reserves will last until July 31.
An official stated, “In case of an emergency, there is provision that is completely untouched and we want it to remain that way. But, if required, we will get the state government's permission to fulfil the city's needs.” The Vaitarana system receives its water from the Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarana, Tansa and Middle Vaitarana. While the average rainfall required by the end of monsoon is over 2,000 mm, the average rainfall recorded in the past three days only ranges from 55mm to 60mm.
