Mangaluru: Heavy traffic block at Kulur bridge due to ongoing repairs

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jul 23: Vehicular movement between KIOCL Junction and the Kulur arch bridge on National Highway 66 has been severely disrupted due to ongoing road repair work. The situation has resulted in heavy congestion along the Panambur–Kottara stretch, with traffic jams now extending up to Baikampady.

To facilitate urgent repairs, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had announced a complete suspension of traffic on this stretch from 8 pm on July 22 to 8 am on July 25. Despite previous temporary fixes, the road has continued to deteriorate due to persistent rainfall, making conventional asphalting unviable. As a solution, NHAI is now undertaking paver block repairs.

In response to the situation, Mangaluru city police issued a traffic advisory for commuters. During the repair period, the new Kulur bridge will function as a two-way road to accommodate vehicles moving from Mangaluru towards Udupi.

Motorists have been advised to follow alternate routes and cooperate with the revised traffic arrangements to ensure safety and maintain smooth vehicular movement during the repair works.

Some suggestion : 1) These type of repairs wherein complete bridge needs to be closed should be carried out only during late nights or on weekend holidays with proper flood lights unless it is an emergency. 2) at least one lane should be kept opened to traffic on the repair bridge till the other lane is repaired and vice versa 3) Strict traffic policing to be enforced at diversions / junctions at the route 3) Drivers should not be allowed to create additional lanes to jump the queues or allowed to use hard shoulder lane as this creates chaos and minor accidents which again jam the traffic. This is important too. 4) Also alternate route diversion to be provided even though it is longer . Closing the complete bridge is not a good option.

This evening was absolute chaos. It took me two and a half hours to travel from Surathkal to Mangalore. The road was choked with tankers, containers, and long trailers, while frustrated drivers tried to navigate the mess. On a road meant for one-way traffic, three parallel rows of vehicles had formed, and two-wheelers were weaving through every available gap. There was not a single traffic police officer in sight to manage the situation. It was truly dismal. Our politicians and administrators should be made to commute from Kulur to Surathkal themselves to truly understand the magnitude of the problem.

District administration and NH authorities should have carried out this work before monsoons. God knows how many days this work done in heavy rain will stay on this bridge which has been mentioned as deteriorated by the technical team during the tenure of previous DC. Above the bridge damages can be seen..what about below the bridge. Is it safe?

Restrict heavy vehicles ( tankers, trucks, Lorry) from 8 .00pm to 8.00 am . Then the congestion can be avoided. Mangalore smart city needs to plan smartly while carrying out such repairs.

Situation has worsened. Such repair work should have been carried out during non-traffic hours. To add to the complexity, it is raining .
