Udupi, Jun 28: People from the coast are courageous, intelligent and an inspiration to others. If many youngsters from this region, join the police department, it can spark a positive change, said KSRP's ADGP Bhaskar Rao.

He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop held as part of recruitment of youth from the coast in police department. The programme organised by the Karnataka State Reserve Police, Coast Guards and Udupi District Police Department was held at Eluru Mogavira Bhavana, Malpe on Thursday, June 27.

He said, “From the last 4 to 5 years, the local candidates have been showing interest in joining the police force. Law and order is a local issue and there is a need to recruit locals to deal with these. Staff recruited from other districts, need a few years to learn the local language and get acquainted with the place and culture. However, after some years of experience, they opt for transfer to their hometown. Hence, the posts will be vacant and it leads to problems while maintaining law and order in the district.

“There are 1624 police constable, 110 sub-inspector posts vacant in the coastal belt. The police recruitment process is taking place in a transparent manner. There is no scope for political pressure, recommendation, bribe and intermediaries. The police department has taken action against middleman, Rao assured.

“There is no much work pressure in the department as earlier. Today, white collar crime is on a rise and work needs to handle in a smart manner. The department is providing better salary. If the Auradakar Committee Recommendations are implemented, the salary status will be improved. A police staff can avail free health scheme, free canteen facility and are allotted quarters.

Moreover, this is a best opportunity to serve the nation, to do public service and get justice for people who are deprived from it. It is an opportunity to lead an adventurous life and there is scope to work in other divisions also, said Rao.

“Five to six days free training camp will be organised at Malpe by the Udupi District Police Department, Coastal Police Force and KSRP which will help candidates prepare for the physical and written examination,” he said.

Responding to queries from Uday Kome Tekkatte, Chaitra Katapadi, Gopal Kharvi, Jayaraj Byndoor regarding police recruitment process, Bhaskar Rao said the recruitment is transparent and every selection process will be video-recorded. “Candidates' height and weight are checked electronically. Everything will be computerized, and this eliminates involvement of middlemen. Karnataka Police Recruitment is model to the nation. So far, there is no objection filed at court. We will organise such awareness programmes at village level and in colleges,” he said.

District superintendent of police Nisha James in her presidential address said that the process of recruiting police, happened in Udupi last month. “Youths from other districts are attending police exams more than youth from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. Around 28,000 posts are vacant. There is no need to worry about malpractice, bribe, because everything will be held under CCTV surveillance and computerized valuation system. So all can keep faith in this transparent recruiting system and this is open for all,” she said.

Disha Karkera, a trainee, speaking to Daijiworld media said, “Police department should do more publicity of their programmes. I have just completed BCom and it is my dream to join the police department. The department should look after safety of women.”

Chaithra Katpady has attempted exam three times and is now working in Manipal University. “I want to serve my nation. I was trying since three years and still I have good hope,” she said.

Krishnappa, KSRP commandant Hassan, KSRP Janardhan, commandant, Mangaluru, Kumara Chandra, Udupi ASP, Yashpal Suvarna, president, Fisheries Federation, Pasherwanath, deputy director, Fisheries Department and Satish Kundar, president, Malpe Fishermen's Association were present.

Coast Guard Inspector Pramod Kumar welcomed the gathering, while Udupi DySP Jai Shankar rendered vote of thanks.

Manmohan PSI of Control Room compered the programme.
