Udupi, Aug 9: The heavy rains that lashed Udupi district have reportedly claimed three lives. Anitha from Kundapura, Subba from Byndoor and Ganga a resident of Cherkady village, lost their lives in different rain related incidents. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lac to the families of the deceased.
The district administration is waiting for the medical report in the case of Subba’s death.
Speaking to the reporters after a review meeting at DC conference hall on Friday, August 9, Chikkamagaluru-Udupi MP Shobha Karandlaje said, the Karnataka government led by CM Yediyurappa will release Rs 100 crore for managing natural disaster.
The PD account already has a fund of Rs 28.35 crores and an additional Rs 5 crore of CM fund will be added to PD account. “We will instruct PWD to take up road repair works and we will address the problems of harbour Inner transport.”
Only Nada village in Byndoor is affected by the natural calamity. However, according to the survey, the rainfall rate is lesser when compared to the earlier years. There are 278 houses in Nada and arrangements are made to evacuate the people living in the hilly areas and shift them to rehabilitation centre.
“The state government has instructed to release Rs 92, 100 to houses that are damaged and relief will also be provided to partially damaged houses. There is provision to construct house under Basava Vasathi Yojana,” she said.
“In 2018, as many as 9,000 farmers were compensated for their lost yield. The total loss of damage this year is estimated at Rs 63 crores so far. However, the exact amount can be ascertained after the damage assessment,” she added.
“According to reports, as many as 2,516 electric poles were damaged and 2,116 poles are already restored in the district. As many fields are flooded with water, the reinstallation work is delayed. Of the 322 transformers that are damaged, 318 are restored,” she said.
The MP informed that the rescue teams are prepared to save people from danger. A NDRF team is stationed at Surathkal, which will reach Udupi as soon as there is an emergency. Circle police who are trained by NDRF are working during emergency situations.
MP Shobha Karandlaje said the expansion of Karnataka cabinet is put on hold and will be looked into after the relief works across the state are taken up. The state is under higher risk, as more water is discharging from the Krishna river, she said.
Responding to former CM H D Kumaraswamy’s statement, ‘Yediyurappa Elliddiyappa?’ Karandlaje said, “Kumaraswamy got frustrated after losing power. So naturally he will react with aggression as he is under depression. We need not answer to questions of such exhausted people.”
