Beltangady: 'Scoring Good Marks Alone Doesn't Guarantee a Fulfilling Future'

Beltangady, Jun 29: "Scoring good marks does not mean that the student concerned would be able to lead a fulfilling life in future. Extra-curricular activities contribute towards an enriched personality. There is a need to imbibe modern perspective and face future challenges affectively," said Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade.

He was addressing the participants of the state-level seminar on 'The role of principals in changing global scenario,' organized at Sannidhi guest house hall on Sunday June 28, by the Mangalore University First Grade Principals Association, after inaugurating it.

"This is an era of changes. India has grown in the field of education and has matured. The education system being followed in the country is better than many famous universities from elsewhere in the world. If responsibilities are given to genuinely capable persons, we will also be able to lay stress on the aspect of discipline, just like some international universities. However, policies of the government and political pressures affect the ability of the concerned, to take a firm administrative decision," Heggade said. He criticized the practice of depicting college principals as buffoons in the movies.

Heggade felt, the media supplies both good and bad information to the students. He felt, the moral standards of the university students of the country have not fallen to the levels experienced by foreign universities.  A college can function better, if there is good communication, mutual trust and awareness between the governing councils and the principals, he asserted.

In his keynote address, vice-chancellor of Yenepoya University Prof Syed Akheel Ahmed asked the teachers to allow the individual strengths of the students to bloom. India is a knowledge centre and the country's systems can be fortified further by strengthening the educational system, he felt.

The seminar was presided by Dr B Yashovarma, secretary of SDM Education Trust and the president of the said Association.

Bangalore Indian Academy Degree College principal Dr G Venkatesh shared his experience on the issue of getting the National Assessment and Accreditation Council’s accreditation.  President of Degree College Principals Federation Prof Y Bhaskar Shetty and district association president Fr F X Gomes were present.

In our education system, we place all emphasis on intelligence, and very little on wisdom. Logic is synonymous with thinking. We tell our children that thinking is important. We test our children for the information that they are able to reproduce, and label them brilliant. The question we perhaps need to ask ourselves is this - Is thinking important? If so, do we teach it in our schools? Is cleverness enough or do we need our children (and ultimately they are the ones who grow up to adults) to be able to make choices which go beyond one single right & wrong answer. Life is not all about math and science and one correct answer- when will we make our education system reflect that fact?
