Udupi, Sep 6: District level Teachers’ Day celebration committee organized Teachers’ Day - 2018 celebration, in collaboration with G Shankar Family Trust, Udupi at the Shyamili hall at Ambalpady near here on Thursday, September 5.

Minister for Muzarai, harbour and Fisheries, Kota Srinivas Poojary inaugurated the programme.

In his inaugural address Kota Srinivas Poojary said, “There are problems in the education department as well as in the education system too. There was a time, when education was limited to people of upper class in the society. After Independence, the standard of education is good. There is no clarity in the education system as to what kind of education is to be provided. If a person is good in his academic performance, will he be able to pass the exam of life? Did we create such kind of atmosphere? There is a discussion going on whether opting for language should be choice of a child or parent.

"We are struggling to conserve Kannada language. A question was raised when selecting the minister for the education department portfolio, as to will he be capable enough to manage 48,000 government, 2,000 unaided primary schools in the State. There are government schools without toilets and basic infrastructure facilities and running with limited staff,” said the minister.

Continuing his address, Kota Srinivas Poojary further said, “Due to the influence of English medium schools, the government Kannada medium schools have also started English medium. This is very disappointing. Nowadays, there is criticism of teachers, who talk about saving Kannada, getting their children admitted into English medium schools. There is a dilemma in the transfer of teachers. In spite of all these problems, we have been able to maintain the quality of education. There is a necessity of creating good decision and that strength lies in the teachers. Government would work hard to address the problems of teachers and emphasis on education.”

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner (DC) G Jagadeesh said, “I will be a standby in solving the teachers’ problems at anytime and I will be a representative of teachers. Teachers should follow their words first, before teaching others. A good teacher will love his/her students more than his/her children. He must keep himself updated in general knowledge, information and be studious. Only then he could be a good teacher.”

“I have gone through tough days and studied without teachers for many subjects. Today Kannada medium schools are becoming monuments. This should not happen. Let all the students within fifth standard learn Kannada language. If not, the department will take serious action against teacher,” said DC Jagadeesh.
