Bangalore, Jul 21: A division bench of Karnataka high court headed by chief justice P D Dinakaran has asked the BJP government headed by chief minister B S Yeddyurappa to explain its ``failure’’ to comply with its directives to hold elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) by the end of this month.

The division bench comprising chief justice P D Dinakaran and Justice A S Bopanna passed the orders asking the state government to explain why it could not comply with the March 31 directive to hold BBMP polls by July 31.

The bench passed the orders while hearing the interim application passed by state election commission (SEC) seeking an extension of time for conduct of BBMP polls by eight weeks.

The SEC, in its interim application, apprised the high court that it was not in a position to comply with its directive to hold elections by the end of July as the government had completed the exercise for delimitation of wards and roster of reservation for BBMP wards a few days back. The revision of voters list and other essential exercises required time, it said pointing out that at least eight weeks was necessary.

The judges observed that the state government had sought extension of time earlier and the court had ordered that no further extension would be granted while conceding the prayer.

It was unfortunate that the state government had not performed its job, the bench  said and adjourned further hearing to July 23.
