Mangalore: Union Minister Justifies Extension of Train to Kannur

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Aug 11: "Extension of the train to city from Bangalore to Kannur will not in any way, jeopardise the intrests of the citizens of Dakshina Kannada district. It would be improper to exert pressure to cancel this extension," said minister of state for railways, E Ahamed.

His response came, when a memorandum containing demands like not to extend the train to Kannur as proposed, starting of day train to Bangalore etc., was handed over to him by a delegation led by the district BJP president Monappa Bhandary and MLA Yogish Bhat at the railway station here on Monday August 10. The minister said that the long-pending demand of Keraleans for a train to Kannur from Bangalore has been met now. He felt, this would contribute to the development of educational and industrial sectors of both the states. While sticking to the stand that he is not in favour of considering the cancellation of the proposed extension, the minister said, he would examine the possibility of running additional train between the city and Bangalore.

Coastal Development Authority chairman B Nagaraj Shetty, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Srinivas Kamath, office bearers of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and BJP activists accompanied their leaders.

MLA Yogish Bhat said, the railways department has done injustice to Karnataka coast by including the coast, which brings highest revenue to the department, under the Palghat division. He added that he has impressed upon the minister, the need to start a separate Mangalore division.

Local MP Nalin Kumar Kateel felt, there are differences of opinion within the railway ministers. "When a similar demand was placed with the other minister of state for railways, K H Muniyappa, he had assured that the extension of the train would be cancelled. Ahmed now is singing a different tune. If our demands are not met, we will resort to 'rail roko' agitation at Karwar, Udupi and Mangalore simultaneously," he warned.

Once in a while our so called leaders raise the issue of starting separate Mangalore division. Why these MP''s and MLA''s seriously take up this issue like Mamata Banarjee did against TATA''s. We don''t need lip service from our MLA''s and MLA''s.

We need serious act from these guy''s so that we mangaloreans need not communicate in broken Malayalam in Mangalore railway station. This is real test for the first time MP Mr. Nalini Kumar Kateel who is known as good organizer. If really make your term memorable fight for New Mangalore Division and get it.

Adding 4-6 bogies exclusively for Karnataka could keep most here happy. People in Malabar region are also Indians and they have just as much as right as any of us in getting direct trains from their twon to blore. Fighting/rail roko is going to reflect badly on mangaloreans. We have always had good relations with only one neighbor,ie,Kerala. Dont unnecessarily spoil decade-old relations for issues which can be solved by talks with the concerned..thats what I have to say :)

Things were going smooth with a single train. It was the Railways to assess demand and start new services. Instead of doing that, this new guy plays spoilsport by altering the train. So should we accept this and ask for new trains which they take their own sweet time to materialize? Who are the losers in the meantime?

Vinod, The extension of train is a political gain. There is news that decks were cleared by Konkan railway to extend until Karwar and the extension to Kannur was not viable as it runs during the day. There being a passenger train already to Kannur almost at the same time. If railways had initiated a new Train to Kannur, nobody would object. But changing an existing train and leaving Mangaloreans in a lurch is not acceptable. Its Railway to find alternatives and help, not to leave people to keep begging for rights. Hope you understand.

Naveen, I think Mr.Kamath has got a good point. Instead of diverting our attention against extension, why not fight for adding some day/night trains. We level-headed Mangaloreans should fight against regionalism and should see to it that brothers from Kerala are not denied their rights too. In the name of this, all these MPs and MLAs will do what they are best at..dividing people for their political gains..

Let us not make this a Kerala Vs Karnataka issue and solve it amicably..We Mangaloreans have got enough bad name in recent times, let us not make it a trend..Goondaism and Arm-twisting is not our culture !

Has anyone travelled by the Matsyagandha Express lately. I did a study and this is what I have found- the trains are now sent from mumbai to managlore, then converted into a Mangalore to trivandrum train and then returns to mangalore and sent on to Mumbai- so now three rakes are doing the "ringa ringa rosy" circle. What is the result- cockroaches galore, now even rats as co- passengers and just swept trains- the cleanliness has deteriorated to such an extent in the last year or so that it is no more a pleasure travelling on this Mangalore/ Mumbai special that it was over the years.

The same is going to be the case with the Bangalore Mangalore Kannur train leave alone difficult to get a seat on as it is right now it will be more so once this extension takes place. Bus Lobby Zindabad- so you have got the politicians to put the screws on the aam admi in this manner. Shame on our politicians who only talk and do the opposite.

There should be a rule that no local politicians should decide on matters in their own areas. Let Mamta Banerjee and Muniappa tell E.Ahmed to keep off this controvercy- I suppose they do not have to help the Kannadigas as there is a BJP led Govy in Karnataka. Shame, shame

Kamat, I do not agree on your point on Mangaloreans being selfish. If they had announced an additional night train to Kannur, and a Day train as per demand, It is justifiable. Extending an crowded single train is like snatching a basic travel need on Train. The other person is selfish not Mangaloreans.

Instead of fighting against extension, why not request doubling/adding bogies for Mlore or even adding another train or two..It does not look good and looks uncharacterstically selfish on us Mangaloreans when we are seemingly against improving others lives. .Let us not be put to shame when others remind us that  trains belong to INDIAN railways !!

Why is the minister talking about increasing the trains from M''lore to B''lore, why cant he put the same train from B''Lore to Kannur all the problems will be solved. He is only come to see the reaction of the people, his promises will all be false. We don''t need any justification as it is it is very difficult to get a seat in the train. Some body take him to a internet and ask im to book a ticket on line, then he will know the rea situation.

Well said Sunil. We need to stop giving pleas and instead start agitation. There was a peace March for a good reason and the biased person is still greedy enough to justify it instead of understanding the plight and needs of the Mangaloreans. I wonder what our other Railway Minister for State is doing about this? Earlier Tamil nadu minister created a Salem division, Can our minister create a Mangalore division?

Mangaloreans will have to give up the snob/elitist attitude, and start flooding at the public utilities. The demand and the crowd will be registered then, and suitable arrangements made. For now, across communities, mangaloreans are upper middle class and show off their wealth in their life style. No one would believe we need ordinary transport like trains unless our upper middle class starts using it. Please remember, none cares for the ordinary/poor people.

It is quite a shame that union minster is making comment in the midst of Local delegation without bothering about our issues. This shows the callous attitude of the railways towards Karnataka. I hope our representatives will be more forceful in getting our demands met else it will be a big shame for all of us.

The minister being a Keralite, obviously would be towards Kerala. Why didn''t the minister consider extending Bangalore - Kannur train to Mangalore? Instead of providing benefits of additional trains, improving the stretch to protect from landslides, creating a new division, he seems to play cheap politics on a over crowded single train.
