Udupi, Aug 11: “One should choose a definite line, by highlighting a specific issue and lesser importance to other issues. The journalists should remain anonymous, and discharge their duties to the best of their abilities, without craving for recognition or fame, said journalist Jayant Kaikini.

Kaikini was speaking at a ceremony organized for conferring of the Kadengodlu Shankar Bhat Memorial Poetry Award, held at MGM College Ravindra Kala Mantap, here on Sunday August 9.

On this occasion, Kaikini also delivered a talk on whether there is a need to create people’s opinion against the proposed thermal power plant and whether it is appropriate to discuss the hot topic of gay marriages.

The unscientific divide between followers of different streams, has been the chief cause for the differing logics being put forth by the people who have studied science and arts subjects.  Those who had opted for science, think that they are intelligent, while those who had opted for arts, have developed an inferiority complex.  Those engaged in science lack social sense while those engaged in redressing of the social issues, lack scientific approach, Kaikini added.

In the past, the readers used to post their opinions on various topics that are published by periodicals, without ever visiting the publisher’s office.  However, now the times have changed, with the readers coming closer to the publishers, under the guise of one or the other issue.  Therefore, the journalists should try to remain aloof and function as anonymous individuals without becoming too close to the readers, he emphasized.

Various publishers in Karnataka need 52 stories in a week, as a result of which, the publishers are not in a position to maintain the quality, since they have to publish stories without a choice, he noted.  Meanwhile, Kaikini urged the readers not to encourage all the bloggers, since most of them write in anonymity and without responsibility in various web portals.

Entertainment industry has grown as a great commercial enterprise, while training of staff in such industry is the need of hour.  Youths are taking up reporting without following the ethics of the profession and disregard the need to extoll human virtues.  The educational institutions should devise a curriculum that trains the media persons in right perspective, he stressed.

The dailies are increasingly becoming voices of the politicians. Therefore, there is a need for the reporters to report without bias, Kaikini urged.

Kadengodlu Poetry Award was conferred on lawyer K Govindaraju, a retired employee of SBI, Mysore branch, for his poetry, ‘Valmiki Ayussu Vyasara Manassu’, on this occasion.

Manipal Academy of General Education administrator Dr H Shantaram presided over the programme.

Kadengodlu Eshwar Bhat’s son Shankar Bhat was also present.

Yerya Laxminarayan Alva welcomed the gathering.  Prof M Ramachandra and Dr D R Pandurang introduced the awardee.  Govind Pai Research Centre director, Prof Krishna Bhat compered the programme.
