Bangalore, Aug 14 (DHNS): A pall of gloom descended on Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering campus when a third semester student reportedly fell from the seventh floor of the college building resulting in his death on the spot.
The Kumaraswamy Layout police identified the deceased as Prateek Kumar Thakur (20). A native of Patna, Bihar, Prateek was pursuing his degree in telecommunications. Thursday was the first day of college for third semester students.
Prateek had returned from his native place two days ago. His body was found at the entrance of the new business school building. Prateek had apparently fallen head-on, and blood was found splattered on the spot.
A student, who first saw Prateek writhing in pain, told Deccan Herald: “Around 11.50 am, I heard a ‘thud’, and turning back, I saw a body lying in a pool of blood. A woman was crying out for help. Blood was oozing out, and some white paste-like substance had gathered on his head. His limbs jerked briefly, and soon the body lay still.”
Soon, he was shifted to the hospital on the campus. Prateek had, in fact, fallen on Meena, a help at the college. She suffered a fracture on her shoulder.
Sources said Prateek had attended a session before sneaking out of the classroom.
According to college authorities, Prateek was a bright student, but an introvert. He was staying in the City as a paying guest and was a regular to the college.
One of his roommates told the police that Prateek was cheerful and looked peaceful the previous night. As he woke up late, Prateek had already left for college. Prateek is the son of BN Thakur, a software engineer in Delhi. He is also a relative of a former DIG of Bangalore.
The police are perplexed, as many questions remain unanswered. The telecommunications building is situated at a distant place on the campus. But why did Prateek walk up to the new business school building? If he wanted to take the extreme step, why did he chose the business campus? Did he go to meet his friends at the business school? Did any of his friends accompany him to the seventh floor?
Did he lose balance and slip while trying a stunt?
Incidentally, the police found his bag on the seventh floor. The bag contained a demand draft worth Rs 1.4 lakh in favour of the college, a mobile phone, diary, and notebooks, besides the xerox copies of his passport.
However, the police are not ruling out a love angle.
