Karkala, Aug 22: Subhit Kumar from the Congress Party was elected unanimously as the president of Karkala Municipal Council. This announcement was made by the taluk Tahsildar Achuta, who functioned as the returning officer for the poll, held here on Friday August 21, at the municipal office here.
It had earlier been agreed to share the first presidential term of 30 months, at the rate of 15 months each. The election was held after previous incumbent Seetaram resigned after being in the chair for about 17 months. The Congress Party, which has a membership of 13 in this 23-member body, has absolute majority in the Municipal Council.
Subhit is a commerce graduate and real estate businessman. He is presently functioning as the president of the town Congress committee. After taking charge of the post, Subhit promised to strive for improving the basic amenities in the town and to give top priority to the efficient management of the underground drainage system. He also expressed the confidence that he would be able to convince the citizens of the town, to extend their support in the ambitious road-widening programme being taken up by the municipality. In addition, he promised to examine the possibility of laying a ring road for the town.
MLA H Gopal Bhandary, who congratulated the new president, requested the municipal councillors to come together and work for the betterment of the town, by overlooking political differences. He assured his full support to the new president, in the capacity of being the MLA of the constituency. Opposition leader in the council, Navinchandra Hegde, also congratulated the new president.
Vice president Nalini V Acharya, standing committee chairman Shubhada Rao and chief officer Madan K were present at the dais.
