Udupi: Excise Officials Seize Contraband Spirit, Arrest Two

Udupi, Aug 25:
Excise policemen assisted by Kaup circle inspector Cheluvaraj seized spirit which was being illegally transported in a Maruti Alto car from Goa to Kerala at Ucchila, near here, on Sunday August 23.
 
The policemen arrested two persons from Kerala and seized contraband spirit in the raid while two others managed to escape. The arrested have been identified as 22-year-old Vijay, a resident of Palla Kudalmerkala, near Permude in Kasargod district of Kerala, and 19-year-old Noushad, a resident of Oduvar, Paivalike in Kasargod. 



The 700 litres of seized spirit was stored in 20 cans and is estimated to be worth Rs 3 lac.  The policemen also seized the car that was used to transport the spirit.
 
The excise personnel on Sunday morning followed the Maruti Alto which was plying on National Highway 17 carrying the contraband spirit.  The local police led by Cheluvaraj assisted the excise officials in nabbing the accused who abandoned the car beside the road at Ucchila fish market and tried to flee. 

Excise deputy superintendent Puttaswamy and sub-inspector C E Timmayya led the operation and were assisted by policemen Vittal Poojary, Shekar Nayak, Chandrashekar, Kamalaksha, Mahabala, Santosh Ambagilu, Jayakumar Herga, Amratesh Ullal, Imran Doddannagudde, jeep driver Satish.  Kaup sub-inspector Joy Anthony, Padubidri sub-inspector Mohan Kottari and others also assisted in the operation.
