Bangalore, Aug 27: High court (HC) chief justice (CJ) P D Dinakaran has been promoted as Supreme Court justice.

Dinakaran took over as HC CJ on August 8, 2008. During his tenure as HC CJ, Dinakaran was instrumental in prompting junior doctors to call off their strike during May 2009 after special bench comprising Dinakaran and Justice N Kumar decided to initiate contempt proceedings against them.

The order was passed after the High Court took suo motu notice of the strike and media reports on the plight of the poor and needy patients. The bench met at the home office of the CJ, a first instance in recent years wherein a special sitting was held at CJ’s residence.
