Chikmagalur, Sep 16: The naxals, who tried to enter a house on Sheerlu village of Sringeri taluk in the district, had to go back disappointed, because of the stiff resistance offered by the villagers. Before going back however, they threatened the villagers with dire consequences.

On the evening of Sunday September 13, a gang of naxals led by B G Krishamurty, comprising of Mundagaru Lata, Hosagadde Prabha, Srimati and four other women cadres, arrived at Sheerlu village at around 6 pm. When they tried to enter a house in the village, the villagers stopped the gang, by saying that they do not want to entertain them, as their visit would earn the wrath of the policemen, resulting in their harassment.

When the naxals demanded rice, the villagers refused to oblige. Hosagadde Prabha, one of the naxal leaders, then threatened the villagers by warning that she knows how to tame the villagers, who of late, have been showing hospitality towards the policemen and refusing to entertain the naxals, before the gang retreated.

Immediately after the policemen came to know of the incident, policemen led by Koppa deputy superintendent of police Abu Ahad rushed to the spot and started combing operations.

District superintendent of police M N Nagaraj, who gave the details of the incident to the pressmen, said that a mass contact programme presided by inspector general of police, Gopal Hosur, had recently been held in Sheerlu village, which has enabled the government to earn the confidence of the villagers. The people have rejected the naxal offer by saying that the government is prepared to provide them what they want, he opined.
