Udupi: Leopard Enters Village, Injures Two, Gets Killed

Udupi, Sep 21: A young leopard which appeared all of a sudden, at Ranganakere near Barkur in the district on Sunday September 20 afternoon, inflicted serious injuries on two residents, before getting killed by the angry villagers.

At around 2.30 pm, a female leopard, aged about two years, came to the house of Chandu Naik (70) and pounced upon his pet dog. Chandu Naik, who was standing in front of his home then, tried to shoo the animal away, to save his dog. The leopard then let go of the dog and jumped at Naik. Shekhar Naik (40), who was inside the house then, came out and made efforts to scare away the animal, but it injured both of them.

The neighbourers arrived there by then and hit the animal with sticks and stones till it breathed its last. Range forest officer Sanjeev Ganiga arrived in the village after the information was passed on to the department, and made arrangements to bury the carcass of the animal after conducting post mortem at the veterinary hospital in Brahmavar. The injured persons are being treated at a private hospital in Brahmavar.

The policemen have registered a case of killing the wild animal against the villagers under the Wildlife Protection Act.
