Stripping of Bhuj college students serious issue: CM

Gandhinagar, Feb 15 (IANS): After a nationwide uproar over forcing dozens of girl students to remove their cloths by Swaminarayan College officials in Bhuj and the police lodging complaints against four, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said here on Saturday prompt and strict steps would be taken against culprits.

"We have taken prompt measures. Such issues of sexual harassment could not be tolerated. The education department is also looking into it," Rupani told the media at an event.

After one of the 68 girls came forward to file a complaint, the Bhuj 'A' Division police station on Friday filed an FIR against the Sahajanand Girls Institute officials, which included Principal Rita Raninga, advocate Anita, peon Naina, rector of the girl's hostel Ramila.

They have been booked under IPC sections 384 for extortion, 355 for assault with intent to use criminal force, 294 for obscenity, 506(2) for criminal intimidation apart from 509 (outraging the modesty of women) and 505(3) for statements for public mischief at a religious place.

The investigation is being led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). They are collecting CCTV footage and other evidence linked to the alleged crime.

According to the allegation, many girls were asked by the accused to remove their undergarments for inspection whether they were having menstruation. After the incident, the girls were threatened by the college officials to keep mum or their careers would be destroyed.

Akshay Kumar can make a Bollywood movie about sanitary napkins called Pad Man, and can appear in a public service ad to talk about the topic. But that doesn’t mean Indian society has got the memo on menstruation. This became abundantly clear when 68 young women from a college in Bhuj in Gujarat were ‘paraded’ from their class to the washrooms, so that teachers could check if they were bleeding from their vagina, something which all women till a certain age do.

In 2020, there are still spaces that Indian women cannot enter. Sabarimala temple controversy proves that. Many cannot enter the kitchen or attend religious festivities in their homes.

Menstruating women will be reduced to PMS (premenstrual syndrome) jokes, sympathetic looks and the ‘sorry it’s not a good enough reason to take leave’ comment. Or in this case, in Bhuj, paraded through the college for seeking food while menstruating, even though studies have proven that women are especially weak during their periods. All uniquely female biological experiences are painful, including labour and menstruation, but nobody really wants to acknowledge this pain because it is in service of the larger and most important patriarchal function — procreation.
Sabarimala temple, Gujarat college or PMS jokes women's biological problem become shame of India.
Will our Women and welfare minister Smriti Irani will act now? Is Udupi MP Shobha Kardlanje who has special interest in Pakistani women will speak now? Where are the women organisation of RSS is silent?

This type of sinister harrassment can not come from ordinary people. It has full support from the high command. CM Rupani is only protecting and covering up his evil masters.

I just wonder what kind of inhuman and barbaric mentality these people have! Is it just a coincidence that the incident happened in our dear PM's own state? Beti bachao, beti padao slogan remains only on paper!
