'Act of Desecration' says Archbishop Peter Machado over removal of Jesus statue

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Mar 10: Bengaluru Archbishop Peter Machado has described the removal of statue of Jesus Christ from a hill in Devanahalli taluk as ‘desecration’. Saying the act has immensely hurt the Christian community, Machado demanded the statue be returned to the place, from where it was uprooted.

On March 2, civic authorities of Devanahalli near Bengaluru removed a statue of Jesus Christ and the Stations of the Cross, following allegations of illegal encroachment and religious conversion from Hindu residents of the village.

Archbishop Peter Machado

S Ajith Kumar, the tahsildhar who supervised the operation maintains that the land was allotted as burial ground but not for Christians or any particular community. He said that statements which claim that the land was allotted to become a Christian graveyard are false.

When questioned by a media channel on hurting the sentiments of the community, Rai said that he was only following guidelines. “People from other communities had raised an issue. It’s not just Christian statue, we have removed temples also when rules were flouted,” he said.

While the tahsildhar denies discrimination against any community, statements by Hindu Jagaran Vedike state secretary Keshavmurthy are triggering a controversy.

"We welcome the stopping of Christian missionary activities and the removal of Jesus Christ statues by the district officials with the help of the police,” he said.

The Vedike had warned protests if the statue was not removed by Ugadi. It had also filed a Public Interest Litigation demanding the removal of the statue.

Meanwhile, the Church authorities said they will initiate legal action. Maintaining that the land was allotted for a Christian graveyard, the authorities claim they have documents to prove the same.

The archbishop expressed grief that the statue was uprooted like a piece of cement and questioned if government has reduced to a level, where it acts on an outcry of a mob.

The archbishop asked government to intervene and control fringe groups. He said that memories are still afresh when churches were attacked in 2008.

While Congress MLA N A Haris demanded an answer from the government on why the statue was removed, BJP MLA Kumar Bangarappa said that be it any religion, law stands about everything.

Citing Ram Mandir issue as an example, Bangarappa said that the issue went on for centuries. Ultimately, justice prevailed and Muslims accepted the Supreme Court judgment.

“We are not against anybody. It is against the law. The state government has given Rs 200 crore for the same Christian community,” he asserted.

I had said on the same day that the government may be expecting payback when it released 200 crores for the development of Christians.

BJp will keep on floating schemes like toffees; but what they want in repayment is the religious rights controlled as per their authority. For this purpose they will even take some moles from the religious minority and give them some position and portray them as the representative of the minority community to make their target easy to achieve.

When more than 100 years old temple was removed, Hindus did not make any noise.
    Don't be fundamentalists.

Earlier religion was encouraged to make people to fear for god.
Now religious fundamentalism is making god to fear to people.

Most of the religious fundamentalists do not fear or faith in God. I am 100% sure.

Every religion is based on its fundamentals. So technically every practicing religious person has to be fundamentally strong. But It becomes extremism if he forces to practice/ impose his faith on others.
Regarding fearing God, no one should fear God, if he is not committing sins and oppressing others and not giving their due rights. But at the same time the Almighty asks His followers to fear him when they commit sin. Even though the Almighty is the most Merciful, He has put the obligation on Himself owing to His trait of being "The Most Just" to punish the miscreants as they have oppressed against the other people; and The Almighty cannot tolerate injustice even though he is The Most Benefecient and The Most Merciful.

    David,
No. You are wrong in your assessment of Daesh. Daesh are illiterates who claim themselves as scholars. Even the survey conducted by the government agencies has cocluded that the Daesh army is comprised of very less religiously educated people.

There are so many attacks on Jewish places of worship in USA by its majority community. All these attackers claim to be practicing their religion.

Only way to find the fundamentals of religion is by studying the religious scriptures with sincerity; don't try to find it from its followers. You will go astray.

Respect every religion, The fundamentalists of every faith remain blind to the truth that the sigh within the prayer is the same in the heart of the Christian, the Muslim, and the Hindu. I have seen this unity with my eyes, heard it with my ears, felt it with all my being. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Krishna or Lakshmi, and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong. let live in peace and not pieces.

I see many comments today vehemently opposing the act of desecretion; from the same people who had opposed even the applying of review petition against the Babri Masjid decision. The reason given then was that one should not disturb the peace by reigniting the issue. Now, I don't know why the same logic is not applicable here and thereby keep mum on this issue to maintain peace in the society.

When it is someone else's problem every other person gives his/her valuable advices; but they feel the pain of injustice only when they themseves confront with it.

What I feel is that even if the statue is built on public property, it was the duty to give legal notice instead of demolishing it abruptly.

Last time when BJP was in power, they attacked our churches and desecrated Blessed Sacrament and people know what happened to the people who did this. BJP government was wiped out in next election and ministers ended up in prison. Yeddy should remind himself of his past experience. One of the person who was involved in the attacks says that he loves Jesus.
I believe God will punish involved people in his own way.

The archbishop is absolutely right in saying that it was an act of desecration. It was done without taking into confidence the concerned party. It was a unilateral decision by the authorities succumbing to the pressure of fringe groups. The fringe groups had a field day in 2008 in the destruction of churches when BJP was in power in the state. Now again, the rule of fringe groups when the BJP is back to power. Will the tahsildar act against a temple construction at the behest of a group?
Better the BJP reins in its fringe elements who aid them to garner votes. All right thinking citizens must raise their voice against this high handedness.
Now, the CM Yedyurappa will do well to relocate the statue back with honor and respect, if he respects the Christian Community in the state. I am sure he does.

I am strongly against the action of removing the cross .It is really Desecration of as Bishop says.when rule is same to all and law is above everything, then Govt should have served a notice to remove the cross but not remove like a piece of dry wood .That hurts our sentiments. They know we respect our cross ,just like Hindus their holy Deitys.Just because state Govt. has given 200 crores to christian community, doesnt have the right to demolish our cross or remove without any emotional respect. We all should get together and protest against it.They should give back our Jesus Christ Statue too back.

Unless Christians of all denominations stand united as body of Christ and take pride in our religion. These things will happen as long as we go with a don't care attitude. Need to be united. We have so many dynamic personalities who can take the lead to ensure lesser persecution to christianity in our beautiful country. As it is becoz of our lukewarm attitude we are the most persecuted group in the world. Let love, peace and respect prevail in our beautiful country.
