Mumbai, Mar 13: Amid increase in the demand of hand sanitizers due to the coronavirus, several fake products have flooded the products which do not even offer germ-killing properties. FDA carried out raids on Wednesday and Thursday on several companies. One of the cases, a stock worth Rs 2 lac from a Kandivli distributor, Riddhi Siddhi was confiscated. On further probe, it was found by a drug regulatory body that the sanitisers were manufactured by a Bhiwandi company that surrendered its license two years back.

"We found that the company was making sanitizers illegally and selling it to distributors and chemists. They have violated the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and will be penalised accordingly, but since they have cooperated with police, an FIR may not be lodged," said D R Gahane, FDA assistant commissioner (drugs).

The sanitisers were being sold under the names of Biotol Cosmetics and Wiz. "They were complete fakes and the companies were not making them," he added.
