Coronavirus: With single digit rise, how Kerala managed to flatten the curve

Daijiworld Media Network - Thiruvananthapuram (SD)

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 13: While the nation battles to control the growing numbers of positive coronavirus cases, Kerala state, which has several hotspots of the disease has seen only two positive cases on Sunday. Six out of last 10 days saw only single digit rise.

On the other hand, the state is also credited of highest recovery rate which records 179 recoveries out of 375 cases after 36 patients were cured and discharged on Sunday, which also accounts to 48 percent recovery as revealed by the state government data.

Nationwide the recovery rate stands only 9 percent with only 765 cured or discharged out of 8,447 cases as per the reports of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as per Sunday.

According to Union Health Ministry data, numerically Maharashtra has more recovered cases than Kerala with 208 as opposed to 142, but it also has five times more cases than in Kerala.

Until March 26 Kerala had reported the highest number of positive cases followed by Maharashtra, but gradually the spurt shifted to other states which is also witnessing rapid growth in numbers. The Kerala health department officials said that the trajectory has somehow managed to hit the slope in the past week.

The Kerala government had been in high alert since the peak period, and the positive cases were mostly reported from travellers who had returned from the hotspot areas which is led to believe that the infection had been confined to only with those with travel history, or a very close family members. Although there is no sign of community spread, the officials are on high alert not discarding the possibility.

In Kerala, out of the 375 cases, 233 had travel history, seven were foreigners, 19 were attendees to the Tablighi Jamaat and the remaining are primary contacts of the affected. So far Kerala has a toll of two.

The major hotspots of Kerala state, Kasargod and Kannur which accounts to 63 percent of the total affected in the state reveal encouraging figures which shows Kannur with 36 discharged out of 71 cases and 61 discharged out of 166 cases in Kasargod which indicates 41 percent cured.

Special officer for COVID-19 control in Kasargod, Alkesh Kumar Sharma in his tweet said, "Kasargod is showing results due to effective lockdown, efficient public health and medical teams, cluster containment and smart isolation and quarantine strategies...and a proactive public support to defeat Covid".

Applauding the efforts of the Kerala government an official said, "A lot of factors contribute to the recovery of a COVID-19 patient. The age of the patient, the severity of symptoms, and the virus load are critical elements. All over the country, the treatment protocol suggested by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is followed diligently. We have to study the fast recovery scenario in Kerala."

The credit for the reduction in COVID cases should go to Mr. K K Shailaja , the health minister of Kerala. The way she had handled the Nipah virus in 2018 is well documented. Her experience along with the team of professionals in handling medical emergencies like the COVID-19 is commendable. She is an honour and asset to our country . The government recognises this or not ,but her ability is stupendous.

Most of the cases from Kerala transferred to Mangalore for further management as Kerala Government has claimed that they have no facilities in Kasargod district. Why did they go to Supreme Court to open the border? Some of them went to Coimbatore via Palghat, some to Kanyakumari district of Tamilnadu and also to Mysore district. I don't trust the flattening of the curve.

Kerala won't because Kerala isn't cheap and shameless.
Kerala values human lives. Many Kannadigas are being treated in Kerala at Wayanad Border. But no one talks about it in Karnataka media.
Kasargod will be the next target for Kerala and it will develop Kasargod so much that Mangaloreans will come for Treatment in Kasargod.

Absolutely.. absolutely... Thai is what I always used to say, value humans first.
Many people here was making hue and cry that Kerala is going to send covid patients to mangalore, atleast now hang your face in shame. Do understand emergency has no borders, a person meeting with accident , can’t wait to go get a medical certificate and then finish all checklist that kar govt provided.
Instead a human to human respect would have been solved al issues.

The animosity perhaps stems from the attitude of Keralites. If there
was hatred among Kannadigas how come malayalees in sizable numbers
are spread across Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore and Coorg? They have
created their own groups, clusters wherever they live. They will try to
hoist their language, culture on others. The infinite tolerance of the
locals has allowed them to flourish. However whether this trait of
good neighbourliness was ever reciprocated? By hoisting malayalam
teachers in Kannada schools near the border, by hijacking the minimum
railway needs of the district, by overrunning our railway stations they
have contributed to a large extent to the atmosphere of distrust. They
can perhaps reverse this trend by taking a leaf from our books.

    Trust me
    Kerala can flatten any curve.
That said I am saddened to read from Radhika Madam and a few others that we hate Keralites or something to that effect. It is not true.We love Keralities.
Me , I almost had a Keralite F.I.L. I remember some of my friends also driven out of Kerala because of Love.
That apart, this time around it was a different case.We only are locked down in our houses here ...you see for fear of spread of virus. How can we allow our neighbors to come here and spread ? Simple as that. The day SC ordered borders to be opened we know what happened.
Now let that all be gone. You have flattened the curve..No ?We are very happy.
Everything will pass and Love will bloom again.OK ?

Keralite have flourished out side Kerala and the earnings has been invested in Kerala. We find keralites doing very well in all parts of the world but their behaviour within the state deplorable. Unions have closed all most all industries and salaries of daily wagers is much better than engineer. The agricultural is slowly dying due to shortage of labour high wages and union threats. All Keralatis should vote for party which will eradicate unions , has self esteem to give employment within the state and make self sustainable.
The other states may start loving Kerala too if Kerala provides job and business opportunities to people from other states.
I am a native of Kerala and gave the facts.

Man!! I never knew people from Mangalore hate keralites this much... I studied in Mangalroe and have got a lot of very good friend from Mangalore and I visit Mangalore for meeting my friends and enjoying Mangalore cuisine whenever I come to India...

There are few facts to consider:

For a very long time, there are a lot of patients from northern districts of Kerala relying on Mangalore hospitals for treatment. There are a few reasons for this according to my opinion.

    1. There are many doctors in norther kerala from Mangalore... if the situation is critical, they refer patients to hospitals in Mangalroe/Manipal.

    2. Most of the hospitals in Mangalore are mainly businesses. They want patients from neighboring states to come there. That's how they make money. It is alleged that these businesses lobbied with politicians in Kasaragod to prevent super specialty hospitals coming up there.

    3. Many patients from Kasaragod are of mangaloren origin - they prefer to deal with similar people for health care...

Pls also note that medical emergency access to Mangalore was sought only for non-covid emergency situations... for example - let's assume your close family member was a critical cancer patient who has been getting ongoing treatment from Hospital A. The hospital has all history about your family member. They know everything about the patient. Now, if there is an emergency, will you be comfortable taking your family member to a all new hospital for emergency treatment...?

Side note: Kerala is still allowing patients from Karnataka and Tamilnadu to come to Kerala for treatment in other bordering districts.... so, we value humanity above everything else.

    Dear Joseph,
Since you make lots of sense in your opinion, may I request you to mobilize support to put up a modern hospital of at least 1,000 beds in ten days like the Chinese managed to put up...?

This is the time for Keralites to fight the "So called lobby" you mentioned, and get moving forward.

You guys succeeded in getting so many international airports, which involve huge investment, why not a decent health care system in your own State may I ask?

Is there anything stopping you from fighting the Mangalore lobby as you claimed?
