Kundapur, Sep 6: Two separate road accidents reported in and around the taluk on Saturday left one person dead, a student severely injured, and a group of migrant workers with a miraculous escape.
In a tragic incident near the Mabukala bus stand, a 49-year-old man lost his life and his son sustained severe injuries after their scooter rammed into the rear of a bus. The deceased has been identified as Raviraj, originally from Kirimanjeshwar and currently residing in a rented house in Matapadi. He was employed as a driver.

As his son Anil, a student at a private educational institution in Kota, was running late for classes, Raviraj was dropping him to school on his scooter. According to reports, a bus plying from Brahmavar towards Kundapur overtook another vehicle and abruptly stopped on the national highway without any prior indication. Raviraj's scooter crashed into the right rear side of the bus and went under the heavy vehicle.
Both the father and son were grievously injured in the impact and rushed to a hospital in Brahmavar. The doctors declared Raviraj brought dead, while Anil is currently undergoing treatment as an inpatient. Enraged locals took the bus driver to task for his sheer negligence. Raviraj is survived by his wife and two sons. A case has been registered at the Kota police station.
In an unrelated incident on the same day, migrant labourers residing in makeshift tents had a narrow escape after a fish-laden lorry overturned near the Mullikatte junction in Hosadu village on National Highway 66.
The lorry, heading from Byndoor towards Kundapur, rear-ended another lorry moving in the same direction. The impact caused the fish lorry to veer off the road and topple into a roadside drain, right next to the tents of the migrant workers.
The drain acted as a crucial barrier, saving the lives of the tent dwellers. Had the drain not been there, the heavy vehicle would have crashed directly into the tents, potentially resulting in fatalities. Just moments before the mishap, a national highway contracting agency vehicle had dropped the labourers at the very spot. All the workers are reported to be completely safe.
