Stranded Americans in India rejecting offer to return home: US Official

Daijiworld Media Network - Washington (SHP)

Washington, Apr 29: As the number of positive cases in the United States witness a rapid increase, many stranded Americans in India who signed up to get airlifted are now reconsidering their stand. As per the state department's top consular official, several of the Americans in India were now deciding to drop the idea of going back to their country and deciding to 'ride it out' the pandemic.

Principal deputy assistant secretary of State Ian Brownlee said on Tuesday that many who had enlisted for repatriation from India were not responding to offers of seats on the planes arranged by the department to take them home.

The pandemic continues to strengthen its noose around the United States, with the cases on Tuesday touching the 1 million mark and over 58,348 deaths. Meanwhile, India has 31,332 officially recorded cases with 1,007 fatalities.

Brownlee said: "Two weeks ago, we had a list of folks and we were pretty sure if we called (the) folks they'd show up at the airport and say, 'Yes, please.' We're now getting to the point on that list, where we're making multiple calls for individual seats because people are deciding 'No,' and are saying that they would ride it out where they are."

Last week, Brownlee asserted that 4,000 Americans had been brought back to the US and 6,000 were waiting for airlifts.

India has cancelled passenger flights and rail transportation during the strict lockdown imposed on March 25.

Earlier, Brownlee had also explained the massive logistics involved in bringing Americans from around the country to Mumbai and New Delhi, the departure points for the chartered flights.

While this article as about American's who have made the decision to stay back in India and not go back to America, people have felt the need to comment on Modi and Trump. Why? Why do we always feel the need to make a link between every damn thing? Why can't we just simply comment on the fact that American's have decided to stay back in India? the reason can be that they don't want to infect other people. Also because as soon as they go back to America, they will be in quarantine. So maybe they feel that there is no need to spend so much money just to go to America and then ultimately stay in lock down again? It is the truth that Modi has made a good decision to go ahead with the lock down but it is very clear that more needs to be done for the people living in slums because the death rate in India is nothing to be proud about. So lets not bring politics into everything. Because while some people are worthy of praises, more action is still needed to be taken.

That's probably the smarter thing to do instead of demanding to come back and putting everyone else at risk. America and India are both heavily impacted countries so no point in jumping from one to the other. Everyone's prayers are with all the people who are stranded away from home! It's a tough time for everyone and the best idea may be to stay put where you are until the situation eases and bit

As a super power Trump made a grave mistake that he can handle the situation easily. Due to worry of economy crash..he kept all the things open saying people who die will die even during lock down. Here where he went wrong in his calculation. People wont forgive him. He used Herd Therapy.
In NewYork they unable to control the situation. More and more coffins flow in pn regular basis. Goras are died much as compare to kalas and brownis. In Italy they forgotten almost elderly people to die. World leaders appreciated much of modiji strategy.

So you're a modi fan? That's good! And you're right, modi did the right thing by the lock down. And while it may help many people, what has he done to help the poor people who are dying? Because the numbers in India aren't exactly low despite the lock down. People are still dying in India and at a great rate. The sad truth. My comment had nothing to do with modi or trump, so why you felt the need to drag your praises of your modi is beyond me.

As of today, truth is india has done remarkable well considering its huge population. Definitely timely lock down decision by PM has helped save thousands of lives. Of course there bound to be problem but nothing can be more than human lives. India has population almost 4 times more than US, where US reported 1 million cases with nearly 60k deaths. India has nearly 30k cases and just above 1k deaths as of now. This statistics speak for itself.
It is unfortunate that some people have problem in recognizing achievements of their motherland(if they think so)

People like you hate our PM Modiji day, afternoon and night. Shame on your useless banter and spewing venom. So what if PM Modiji loves America, Americans and Trump ? He is trying hard to create a worldwide market for our goods and services. And now with the world angry with China, PM Modiji is building interest in our manufacturing bases to replace inferior quality Chines factory. But people like you love the Vadra family and will never improve.

Is it because of inferior quality that all major manufacturers in the world source their components from China! Even IPhones are assembled in China; do you ever think of any country competing with China in efficiency & pricing!

It's not like handing huge fighter plane contract to a co who has no idea of mfg paper planes bypassing HAL??
