Mangalore, Feb 3: “The local administrations should lay more emphasis on increasing the revenue through cent percent recovery of taxes”, advised Third State Finance Commission chairman A G Kodgi.
He was speaking at the review meeting of the commission held at Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), here on Tuesday February 2.
Kodgi suggested streamlining of all property data under MCC. The shortfall in recovery of taxes affects the over all revenue, hence it becomes necessary to collect taxes from everyone, he added.
“About 90% of taxes are being collected in all municipal and taluk councils in the DK district, while the recovery rate is expected to reach 95 percent this year”, explained deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj. He informed that Rs 10 crore has been awarded by the municipal administration for the proposed bus stand at Pumpwell and it has acquired seven acres of land already in this regard. More funds are required for further development.
“The process of constructing a new vented dam at Thumbe is in progress. The local farming has expressed apprehension of likely floods, when the work gets completed and water is stored in the dam. Hence a survey will begin within a week to assess the likely flooding in the catchments area”, added Ponnuraj.

MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary urged the municipal and taluk councils to take a decision to implement the recommendations of the commission by the coming financial year and forward the same to the state administration. Mayor Shankar Bhat insisted the commission to take earnest interest in implementing 74th amendment to the Constitution and also in the state.
