Mangalore, Feb 22: B. Suresh, a film-maker, has said that there was a concerted attempt by some sections at glorifying, distorting and oversimplifying history for gaining political mileage.

“Each one of us should identify and resist this conspiracy to rewrite history because our future and present depends on it,” he said while addressing a rally to mark the 12th divisional conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) at Ullal on Sunday.

Referring to the recent State Government-sponsored celebration of Krishnadevaraya’s 500th coronation anniversary, Mr. Suresh said, “These celebrations, in which the Government has spent huge money, are prime examples of attempts at distorting history.”

Krishnadevaraya’s legacy was against the principles of democracy and he was being projected as a benevolent ruler.

“But there is enough evidence to show that he was a tyrant and responsible for the first farmers’ riots in the State,” he said. Describing today’s youth as “screen-agers”, he said that they were living in an imaginary world created by the media. “The media-created reality is that a man can attain superhuman abilities by drinking a bottle of cola. But, in the real world, there is more cola than drinking water,” he said.

Expressing concern over the manner in which youth were losing social concern, he said that organisations such as the DYFI should spread awareness among the younger generations about these issues.
