Bangalore: ‘SC Verdict Will Cause Cultural Debacle,’ - Justice Rama Jois

Bangalore, Mar 29: “The verdict of the Supreme Court that pre-marital sex is not an offence, will pave way for the cultural debacle of Indians,” felt retired Governor of Bihar, and former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Rama Jois. He was speaking at a function organized at Maharashtra Mandal, Gandhinagar here, by Pushaka Shakti Publications, for releasing eight books, on Sunday March 28.

“The systems of joint family, systematic creation and running a family, etc., are part of the culture our ancestors had given rise to, for convenient living and disciplined life. Marriage is the blissful association of a man and a woman for a fruitful life-long relationship. The court has taken initiative to destroy this culture. This verdict will have a bad influence on the children,” he asserted.

“Even after innumerable attacks by foreigners, temples have taken a lead role to conserve Indian philosophy, righteousness and culture. In the recent past, there has been a shift in the behaviour of the people here, who, because of the influence of western culture, have been behaving in a way that is inferior to even animals,” he regretted. While adding that the cultural pollution has been acquiring fearful proportions, which is sure to lead to the destruction of the country, he advised the people to come together to save Indian culture.

Stalwarts like Prof G Venkatasubbaiah, Prof L S Sheshagiri Rao, H R Srinivas, Prof H S Lakshminarayan Bhat, M G Upadhyaya and Y Avaneendranath introduced the eight Kannada books released on the occasion.

Y K Mohan of Pustaka Shakti Publications, Kuntal R Amin etc., were present.

I do not agree with Justice Ram Jois that there will be cultural debacle in India just because of an opinion expressed by the Supreme Court. The court opined that there is no provision in our Constitution or any other law to bar pre-marital sex or live-in arrangements. Being a law luminary himself, Justice Jois should not have cast such an impression the opinion of the Supreme Court is in no way a blanket permission for such acts. I do not think that just because there is no court restriction on pre-marital sex, people will indulge in more such acts.

Does he mean that all these years people did not indulge in pre-marital sex assuming that it was not allowed under our justice system? Sexual activity doesn’t have a correlation with the legal provisions, it depends on lot more other factors. If we want our children to be kept away from the western sexual culture, it is our (parents, society, government) responsibility to impart moral values and principles in them. Let us not get carried away by the fear psychosis that Indian culture is going to be uprooted.
Also, it is quite ironical that one side we are not shying away to blindly copy the western style of exhibiting the vulgarity through various media, and on the other hand, we are very vociferous about our children adopting such a culture. What an hypocritical value system we have !
