Farmers' income won't double before 2028, Derek tells Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Sep 20 (IANS): Taking a dig at the Centre's claim to double the income of farmers by 2020, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien on Sunday said that it cannot be doubled before 2028.

Discussing the contentious farm Bills introduced in the Rajya Sabha, the TMC member said: "The Prime Minister said that the opposition is trying to mislead the farmers. You promised to double the farmers' income by 2020. At the current rate, it won't happen before 2028."

He was referring to the Prime Minister's remarks on Saturday that some persons were trying to mislead and even lie to the farmers.

Referring to the land acquisition Bill and TMC's stance, O'Brien said: "How qualified is the TMC to speak on the Bills? Seven years ago... during the land acquisition bill... we spoke in favour of the farmers. Later, the Supreme Court said that the rights of the farmers cannot be overlooked."

The TMC leader also claimed that West Bengal farmers' income has doubled.

"Don't bring the debate down to MSPs; we are opposing everything in the Bills. The Centre doesn't have the right to implement these in the states. The states will not be able to ensure farmers' interests. Who are you going to fool here? For the consumers too, what's the protection? These Bills will have to be discussed and debated," he said.

The TMC MP also moved amendments to send the farm Bills to the Select Committee of the Rajya Sabha. He said that the parliamentary committees are not to break but contribute to law-making.

Is the government expecting the farm production to double just because a Bill related to sale of their profuce is enacted ? That too through an ordinance, not after discussing pros and cons of the Bill ?

Common you Parliamentarians, in which world are you guys living ? Aren't you satisfied after running a triar & error government for six years ?? What do you expect to happen if a farmer ends his life for his inability to sell his produce since the Mandi system will not function anymore ?

The Farm Bills bills will cease Goondagiri and provide barrier-free trade for farmers’ produce outside notified farm mandis and empower farmers to enter into farming agreements with private players prior to production for sale of agri-produce.

The government claims that these initiatives will help farmers get better prices for their crops, by legalising contract farming, for instance.

Farmers are very happy but not our impacted politicians!!

Farms management was always a state subject - as per the Federal structure established when India became independent.

    Each state has unique needs.

But, the RSS idea has been 'One Everything' for the whole of India.

These farm bills fit the RSS aspirations, but certainly anti-farmer. Many farmers might give up farming because of these bills.

If the farmers do not oppose the bills, the Bihari and Kerala babus from Delhi will be managing the farms all over India. Will the farmers understand these babus' language?

reducing middlemen by getting farmers to acess to any market in India is in farmers interests. However the idea of MSP is not good. let the farmer produce as per the demand and supply rules.
