Mangaluru, Nov 17: After the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has initiated the process of appointing members for ward committees in 60 wards, following a direction from the high court, the members of Karnataka Ward-Samithi Vedike who initiated civic minded citizens in applying application forms will collect application forms in MCC gate on Tuesday November 17 and submit them at the commissioner's office.

Speaking at the press meet, Narendra Kumar of Nagarika Shakti said, "We have received nearly 70 applications from civic minded citizens. We have received few applications through mails. Hopefully, we may receive 250 applications.”

He also said that the members will meet the MCC commissioner to submit a memorandum and thank him for his initiatives and urge him to ensure the common man gets to participate in ward-development activities.

Members of the samithi also expressed that the Karnataka Ward-Samithi Vedike is working towards enabling citizen participation in local governance, through ward-committees and area sabhas for the past years by generating awareness, meeting government authorities including commissioner and mayors of many city corporations.

They also urged the general public to actively participate as the ward committee members by filing applications.

In upcoming days, the Karnataka Ward-Samithi Vedike will also work towards setting up area sabhas.

Nigel Albuquerque of MCC Civic Group, social activist Gerard Towers and others were present.
