Beltangady: Man drowns when fishing - Frightened companion flees, arrested

Beltangady, Dec 9: A person who had been to the river for fishing drowned on Monday December 7. A person who was with the victim reportedly did not inform anyone else about the tragedy but ran away from the spot. He was arrested later.

Ramesh (48), resident of Renjala, Shivajinagar in Ujire village, was the one who drowned in river. Sundar Shetty from Shivajinagar who was with Ramesh when he died, has been taken into custody.

Ramesh used to work as domestic help at the residence of a doctor near Ujire on a daily wage basis. On Monday evening, after work, he did not reach home. Repeated calls made to his mobile phone were unanswered even though the mobile phone was ringing. Ramesh's brother, after noting that the mobile was switched off after 10 am on Tuesday, complained to the police.

The police who went to probe, came to know that Ramesh and another person had approached River Somavathi on Monday evening. They found a fishing net, clothes and footwear on the bank of the river during verification. The police officials, an expert diver named Ismail, and firemen searched for Ramesh and on Tuesday evening, and his body was brought out of water.

Sundar Shetty, the man who accompanied Ramesh when fishing, was taken into custody. During his questioning, Sundar revealed that both of them were drunk when they went to catch fish. As Ramesh did not came out of water even after 30 minutes, he said, he developed cold feet and ran away from the spot.
