Sammad Bhatkal Tried to Use Air Crash to Slip in India

Sammad Bhatkal Tried to Use Air Crash to Slip in India

Mumbai, May 25 (Rediff): For some, tragedy throws up an opportunity. Or at least that is what Abdul Sammad Bhatkal thought when he boarded a flight from Dubai to Mangalore, still recovering from a horrific plane crash that killed over 150 people.

Bhatkal, wanted for his alleged role in the 26/11 attack and the Pune blasts, was arrested at the Mangalore airport. According to the initial investigations,Bhatkal never planned to slip into India this time. Thinking that the security officials will be lax in Mangalore especially after a tragedy of such magnitude, Bhatkal pre-poned his visit and tried slipping out easily.  But that was not to be.

Armed with fake documents, Sammad decided to fly and then slip into Bhatkal, a place in North Karnataka. He managed to dodge agencies in Dubai with fake documents. On reaching Mangalore, he even cleared the immigration, but while picking up his luggage, the police team apprehended him. The police said Bhaktal intentionally was trying to use the Mangalore tragedy as an opportunity to slip into India.

For the police, Bhatkal is a prize catch – they think he is part of the deadly quadruple that also include Riyaz, Iqbal and Yaseen.

Bhatkal name first cropped up post-26/11. He was in Pakistan at that time and the role of the Bhatkals had come under scrutiny. His name had cropped up as one of the conspirators at that time too. Despite a look-out notice being issued against him following that attack, he managed to dodge investigators and helped carry out the Pune blasts. Intelligence Bureau officials told that his role in these attacks is yet to be ascertained. Even if at the end of it if his role is not directly established, he still would be able to lead us up to the rest of the Bhatkals who we can say with conviction, he is very close to. At the moment, we are ascertaining whether he had provided logistic support during this incident.

Journey: Sammad was born in Bhatkal and carried out some odd jobs before he left for Dubai to join his father. His father runs a cutlery shop in Dubai. The first visit made by Sammad to Dubai was on a visiting visa. He frequented Bhatkal, several times and met up with Riyaz Bhatkal on every possible occasion. He had a close association with Riyaz since the two are related.

All of them worked for the SIMI before Riyaz helped in setting up the countrywide operations of the Indian Mujahideen. The rest of the Bhatkals later became a part of this group. All of them were in India at the time the blasts at Bangalore, Delhi and Ahmedabad took place. However, Riyaz and his brother Iqbal fled the country following that. It was that point of time that another relative Yaseen came into the picture and managed the operations in India. For a brief period of time, Sammad helped with the operation, but he too had to flee the country.

Yaseen, who is named at the mastermind in the Pune blasts, had a closer association with Sammad since both were in Dubai. Yaseen, a civil engineer, was named by Riyaz himself as the mastermind in the Pune blasts. This was said during a telephonic conversation between Salman Ansari, a IM operative. Ansari who was picked up by the Delhi police had stated that while trying to flee to Nepal, he had sought the help of Riyaz. He further stated that he had congratulated Riyaz on the Pune operation and it was at time the name of Yaseen was mentioned.

The Mumai ATS will now probe into the role played by Sammad in the attack. They would probe whether he had directly played a part in the blast or had just provided logistic support. Further they would also question him whether his role in the 26/11 attack since he was in Pakistan at that point of time. Apart from this they would also seek clues on the location of the other Bhatkals.

The name of the person who was picked up by the ATS officials from Mangalore airport is Abdul Samad & not Samad Bhatkal, Bhatkal is his native place. I can't understand why he is again and agained refered to as Samad Bhatkal, isn't the media is trying to tarnish the name of Bhatkal. ATS chief has issued a catagorical press statment that Samad was not picked for his involvment in any bomb blast but to investigate his role in arms trafficking, then why media is linking his name to Pune blast. Nawayaths of Bhatkal have always been gentle peace loving minding their own business and has been living with local non-muslims peacefully in Bhatkal for centuries without any problem. They are very enterprising and by sheer hard work have made their names in all walks of life and spread throughout the world which has brought financial independence, the fact the outsiders have not taken to their liking and have been trying to harm the image of Bhatkal. Islam is always for PEACE there is no room for violence at all, if anybody is found to be involved in any terrorist activity without any shred of doubt, hang them, they have no place in society, but for God sake do not harras innocent people just because he/she is related to some suspect.

It is unfair to say that he tried to sneak in using the Mangalore Air Crash tragedy, are people so ignorant that they think any body can get reservation at the last moment and fly.

    To Dr Ayesha Nishma,

What you think Samad booked his ticket to fly india soon after the air crash ? he was on visit visa and visitors must book his return ticket before he fly to dubai. Visitor can not go on single ticket.
Secondly if your statement is correct, do you think Samad booked his ticket soon after air crash and airline confirmed his ticket on same day ?

This is indeed, an exercise in futility. To cover up for the acquittal of several muslims in 26/11 case Kasab trail, the ATS is arresting innocent youth. This is utterly disturbing, since as i know Bhatkal is a peace heaven, the locals- hindus, muslims and christian live peacefully there. Its the media that create stories of communal disturbance in Bhatkal, when in reality it aint the fact. We must encourage peace, and such rubbish stories wont promote harmony for sure.

Dear Dr Ayesha, With your qualification at least, before you could comment somthing rubbish on it, you would have investigated for the truth. FUI Samad Bhatkal was in Dubai and Special Investigation Team in India knew about this and they visited Dubai last month. SIT had the information about Samad coming in this AIE flight on that day. As soon as the flight landed, they arrested him and took him to Bombay.
It was all done in a very well planned manner with active involvement of intelligence, Police and Government officials.

The arrest of Abdul Samad and efforts to link him to terrorism by the news channel has shocked not only his close relatives but the whole town of Bhatkal. Muslim youths now consider themselves as unsafe and easy target as happened in Hyderabad following Mecca Masjid blast. Though the Intelligence officers claim that Abdul Samad has been detained only for routine inquiry, the Mumbai ATS team's presence in Mangalore and his subsequent transportation to Mumbai on a special flight suggests a different story.

The family members are disturbed by the thought that the police and intelligence squad might destroy his life by imposing false charges on him. The family members of Abdul Samad have requested the Government Officials not to tarnish the life and image of any innocent youth. Media is not mentioning about his previous arrest wherein he was cleared of all charges. His computer hard disk was also taken and nothing was found. This news is really disturbing where in they want to link the name of Bhatkal with terrorism.

Islam is the most peaceful of all religions but is given a bad name by media and world governments. Not a single muslim is involved in any act of terrorism but are still labelled as terrorists. Muslims have lived in peace since the beginning of Islam in the 7th century. They are the most tolerant of all religions, look at Saudi Arabia how well they treat people of other religions with respect. The media tells lies about Abdul Sammad Bhatkal, he is an innocent and self-respecting individual. Muslims should get together and demand his unconditional release.

This is a wrong information that Samad Bhatkal used Aircrash opportunity to slip in to Mangalore. Absolutely rubbish.

Samad Bhatkal was in Dubai and special investigation team in India knew about this and they visited Dubai last month. Authorities here in UAE, did not want to make a big news regarding the arrest and getting in to news internationally. So UAE authorities agreed with SIT that they will not renew the visa of Samad Bhatkal, instead they would deport him to Mangalore. SIT had the information about Samad coming in this AIE flight on that day. As soon as the flight landed, they arrested him and took him to Bombay.
It was all done in a very well planned manner with active involvement of intelligence, Police and Government officials.

The fact that he has used fake documents proves that he is a criminal. If he was involved in conspiring against India, he deserves hanging irrespective of whether he is directly involved in Pune blasts or not. I hope all Indians agree.
