Mangalore, Jun 8: Fr Muller Charitable Hospital department of Urology got the latest equipment to cure kidney stone, which was inaugurated by assistant commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatte on Tuesday June 8.
Fr Stany Tauro, administrator, Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Dr Manjunath, Dr Althaf, department of Urology and Dr Nandakishore, all from department of Urology, Dr Sanjeev Rai, dean, Father Muller Medical College, Fr Denis D’Sa, administrator, Father Muller Medical College and Fr Patrick Rodrigues, Father Muller Hospital were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr Stany Tauro said that this was a great achievement by Dr Manjunath, who has taken the initiative to get the equipment to the hospital. We are planning to provide all the services and the Urology department has taken steps to introduce advanced technology, he said. He informed that all the departments of the hospital will be upgraded after Urology department.
Dr Manjunath said that the equipment was the only one of its kind in city and is imported from Germany. He thanked Rev Fr Stanley Tauro and all the others who made this equipment a reality.
Speaking to Daijiworld Dr Manjunath said that the equipment cost was more than Rs 1 crore and it works with Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL). Pointing out its features he said that it was minimum invasive, with no Anaesthesia and surgery required. Patients need not get admitted too.
Adding to this he said as the stone of the kidney will be shattered by shockwave there is no radiation of any kind, which in turn will not pain the patients and in turn it will not be difficult for doctors for treatment as no surgery is required.
The shattering of the kidney stone is possible through ESWL only when the size of the stone is 10mm to 25mm. Stone should be present in the kidney only. If the stone has passed to the tube then surgery is required. He also explained that the treatment cost will be Rs 1,000 for 1mm size stone. The poor patients can avail discounts for the hospital is charitable in nature, he said.
